CNN analyst Andrew McCabe on Tuesday pointed out that the Department of Justice never responded to President Donald Trump's IRS lawsuit — and how that could impact Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's nomination.The former deputy director of the FBI told CNN anchor Kasie Hunt that, as Blanche's nomination remains in limbo ahead of Thursday's vote, further questions about Trump's former personal attorney have come to light."Let's remember, there essentially was never really a true lawsuit here," McCabe said. "The president sued the IRS for $10 billion. The Department of Justice never even answered the complaint. So, there were never two opposing parties. The Justice Department never stood up and defended the United States in the way that it did in every other suit brought by the same leak from the same person."This was unusual, McCabe explained."And because of that oddity, that's a very suspicious decision on the part of people like Todd Blanche and others," he said. "The lack of a true controversy meant that the entire thing was about to get dismissed. Before that could happen, they entered into these agreements. One of them, of course, created the weaponization fund, and the second one essentially granted complete immunity forever to Donald Trump, his family members and businesses."McCabe described the situation further."It was basically a giveaway from the Department of Justice to the president," McCabe said. "How this thing stands or was ever conceived — I have no idea. I've been around many, many settlements of criminal matters, some of which involved IRS criminal matters, and have never seen any language like this. I think it's absolutely unprecedented and an incredibly bad idea." The IRS settlement became a sticking point for some Republican senators during Blanche's confirmation hearing. On Tuesday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said there is no deal on Blanche's confirmation because of the settlement and the so-called anti-weaponization fund, Politico reported.

Todd Blanche was warned by a former insider to be careful what he wishes for as he prepares to face a Senate confirmation vote.The acting attorney general is poised to become the most powerful lawyer on earth as the head of President Donald Trump's weaponized Department of Justice, wrote former Homeland Security staffer Miles Taylor for The i Paper, who served some cautionary advice about what to expect."If he loses, it will be a historic failure," Taylor wrote. "But if he wins, the job he’s fighting for is likely to destroy him. And the world will see how far Trump will go if he is unrestrained."His tenure has already drawn scrutiny over the stalled Jeffrey Epstein investigation, which critics say was suspended under circumstances that shielded Trump and his allies. Blanche personally interviewed Ghislaine Maxwell before her transfer to more comfortable custody, oversaw a chaotic release of Epstein files that exposed survivors' identities while redacting alleged abusers' names, and is now facing a federal judge's order to hand over unredacted documents directly — a sign the court no longer trusts DOJ's representations."Blanche set fire to his reputation when he agreed to be Trump’s personal criminal defense attorney," Taylor wrote. "He was the man at the defence table in Manhattan when Trump became the first American president convicted of a felony. But this week is the ultimate showcase of how he might debase himself in an effort to protect his employer."During confirmation proceedings, Blanche submitted over 400 pages of written answers, more than 160 of which declined to respond on grounds it would be "inappropriate." He would not commit in writing to rejecting future slush funds for Trump allies or sweetheart deals for the president — a refusal two Republican holdouts have specifically flagged as disqualifying. More than 1,200 former Justice Department officials across administrations signed a letter opposing his confirmation, citing a "culture of fear" and constitutional failures, dwarfing the fewer than 80 signatures backing him."I worked with both of Trump’s former attorneys general, Jeff Sessions and Bill Barr, and their teams during the first Trump administration, when I served as chief of staff at the Department of Homeland Security," Taylor wrote. "Whatever criticisms people had of those men — and I had plenty — they generally pushed back on Trump’s anti-constitutional conduct."Taylor described White House meetings where Trump ranted at length about settling scores with his enemies, money laundering and other illegal schemes, but he expressed doubt that Blanche would react as his predecessors had."After those meetings, these men would go back to their departments," Taylor wrote. "They’d confer with their teams. And after weighing Trump’s more egregious schemes, they’d conclude that it wasn’t worth going to prison for him."Taylor warned that Blanche would become legally accountable for implementing Trump's most extreme future actions, with no institutional check left between the president and the machinery of government as there had been during his first term."It’s the highest-risk job on earth. And for what?" Taylor wrote. "Trump discards lawyers the way he discards wives and creditors. Michael Cohen went to prison for him. Rudy Giuliani was disbarred and bankrupted for him. His former chief lawyers, Sessions and Barr, looked at the train wreck and walked away while they still could."

President Donald Trump's nominee for the attorney general post isn't merely a "yes-man," he's one who is willing to compromise his own profession and reputation to be a "yes-man." At least, that's what former Department of Homeland Security chief of staff Miles Taylor wrote in his column Tuesday. Taylor spent the first Trump administration trying to sound the alarm from inside the White House, writing a column and then a book under the "Anonymous" title. Todd Blanche, who is likely to be confirmed on Thursday for the post, "has already endured humiliation after humiliation in order to protect his boss. Blanche is now poised to become arguably the most powerful lawyer on earth as Trump’s nominee to run the US Department of Justice outright," wrote Taylor. Were Blanche to lose the confirmation, it would be another in a long line of Trump failures. If he wins, Taylor thinks the job will destroy Blanche. "And the world will see how far Trump will go if he is unrestrained," he wrote. Chief among them is Blanche's directing new attention toward the Jeffrey Epstein files. As the senior Justice Department official overseeing the Epstein files, Blanche has been criticized for a botched rollout that exposed survivors’ names and images while keeping many powerful figures redacted. A federal judge this week was unconvinced by the department’s explanations, and has now ordered Blanche to turn over unreleased documents directly to the court.Blanche’s own actions have fueled further controversy after he personally flew to interview convicted trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, the Epstein co-conspirator. She was transferred to a prison "camp" shortly after their meeting. It is a significantly less restrictive confinementThe confirmation process also highlighted Blanche's evasive testimony. In more than 400 pages of written answers to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Blanche declined to answer over 160 questions as “inappropriate." It appears that two outgoing Republican senators are prepared to tank the nomination of Todd Blanche for attorney general. Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, who hold Blanche’s future in their hands, are particularly concerned with the status of President Trump’s $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund,” a controversial move to provide financial assistance to anyone who feels they’ve been attacked for supporting the president. Cornyn noted in Blanche’s most recent confirmation hearing that even though Blanche claimed the fund was dead, there was no written agreement to actually kill it. Now, he’s demanding it in writing.“What I want is the written document to say the same thing he did in his sworn testimony in front of the Judiciary Committee, and, as you recall, what he said is the weaponization fund is dead. He said the audit immunity basically doesn’t extend to parties beyond the lawsuit, and it doesn’t also extend to future actions by federal agencies other than the IRS,” Cornyn said on Monday. “That’s what we’re trying to get them to agree to, which is again what his sworn testimony was. So I don’t know why they’re—I don’t know why they’re so reluctant to do that when he’s already sworn to it.”Tillis, too, said he wants changes to the settlement agreement with the IRS, which created the $1.776 billion slush fund and gave the Trump family immunity from future IRS audits. Tillis previously threatened to block Blanche’s nomination unless he met with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein. Blanche did so earlier this month, but survivors said the meeting was “demoralizing,” as Blanche continued to avoid answering their questions. “It just felt like more political posturing and using survivors the way that we’ve been used as political pawns,” Epstein survivor and anti-human trafficking educator Elizabeth Stein said at the time.Cornyn and Tillis’s “no” votes would effectively kill Blanche’s nomination, as he needs the support of all 11 Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee to move forward. As of right now, it looks like he won’t get it. The Senate Judiciary is planning to vote to advance fBlanche’s nomination on Thursday.

President Donald Trump's attempts to wage a trade war with Canada are "irrational," but, as a former deputy prime minister detailed in a New York Times piece, there is a deeper reason behind his attacks than just economics.Despite Canada being among the country's closest allies for centuries, Trump has nonetheless been extremely antagonistic toward it since returning to the White House, frequently threatening it with tariffs and often suggesting that it should be annexed as a new state. Most recently, he leveled a new 50 percent tariff against Canada in response to its supposed "discrimination" against American imports, while also threatening additional sanctions over its recent rash of wildfires.Chrystia Freeland previously served as Canada's deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024 under Justin Trudeau. On Tuesday, she published an op-ed for the Times, in which she noted that blaming Canada for a laundry list of things, as Trump has done, "used to be such a fantastical idea that it was a joke," likening it to a famous bit from the long-running TV show, South Park. She also called the effort to start a trade war with Canada "truly absurd" for the U.S., given that the "trade relationship with its northern neighbor is very strong, and mutually beneficial.""The Trump White House knows that, because commerce between the two countries is governed by a trade agreement negotiated during the first Trump administration and lauded by the president himself as 'the best trade deal ever,'" Freeland argued. "Even politicians who were lifelong critics of free trade and opponents of Mr. Trump’s backed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement."Beneath the bluster, Freeland argued that Trump's attacks on Canada actually have "a clear purpose: to demonstrate who is dominant and who must submit.""As a U.S. counterpart told me during the U.S.M.C.A. negotiations in 2018, we are 10 times bigger than you, so we should get our way 10 times more than you do," she continued. "The laughably flimsy, constantly changing justifications for the president’s tariffs are in fact part of the point. True power is being able to do whatever you like for whatever reason you like, or for no reason at all ... You don’t need to have attended meetings in the Oval Office or have a degree in international relations to see that this is what is going on.
