Legal expert aghast as Trump seeks 'cataclysmic' power grab in Supreme Court appeal

A legal expert is sounding the alarm on a Trump move that seeks the Supreme Court's help with a "nasty" power grab.During an episode of Talking Feds, former U.S. Attorney Harry Litman warned that the Trump administration is seeking to take away states' control of upcoming elections after filing an emergency application with the Supreme Court through the Solicitor General."It's their first effort to get the Supreme Court to weigh in on one of Trump's really pernicious ham-handed efforts to just wrest control of the voting process from states," Litman said. "It's about as nasty as it goes."Trump's Solicitor General filed an emergency Supreme Court application asking the court to vacate a lower-court injunction on an executive order restricting mail-in voting. The executive order would take effect before the November 3 midterms, according to Litman."This would be really cataclysmic for the election," Litman said. "The executive order itself was from a few months ago, and it gives the executive branch an unprecedented — and I think, in the reading of all courts so far — unconstitutional role in the elections."Litman added that Trump is doing it "in a way that would really disenfranchise millions of people, and disproportionately by a large margin, Democrats." He also pointed out that the emergency application is reaching the Supreme Court via the "shadow docket."Until now, the Trump administration "shied away" from appealing its voting losses, "so this is the first one, and surprise, surprise, it's by emergency docket...so now, really unfortunately, this goes boom into the court by the so-called shadow docket."The Supreme Court issued a briefing order after getting the emergency application that gives the states and other challengers until August 3 to file a response, Litman noted.

“Pay, Baby, Pay”: New Report Finds that Trump's Energy & AI Dominance Agenda Drive Energy Affordability Crisis

A new report from Oil Change International shows that the Trump administration, the fossil fuel industry, and Big Tech are creating a perfect storm for rising energy prices as nearly 80 million people in the U.S. struggle to pay their electric bills. The administration has thrown its weight behind a massive expansion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and AI data centers that largely run on fossil gas. Alongside Trump’s attacks on affordable renewable energy, these policies are likely to drive demand for fossil gas to unprecedented heights, raising energy bills for families in the U.S. and the countries that import U.S. LNG. The wholesale price of U.S. fossil gas is likely to double by the late 2030s, relative to the 2020 to 2025 average, if Trump’s AI and LNG policies succeed in pushing gas demand to levels that can only be met by more expensive gas production. New production in the Appalachian and Permian Basins can meet a portion of rising demand for fossil gas, but these relatively low-cost basins cannot produce enough gas to meet the surge in demand created by Trump’s policies. One region in particular, called the Haynesville shale play, is expected to fill the gap. Production in the Haynesville shale play in western Louisiana and eastern Texas is expected to soar by over 130%. However, because it’s more expensive to drill in the Haynesville, where gas is harder to access, this aggressive production growth would require prices to rise. Over the past decade, the annual average wholesale gas price (Henry Hub) was $3.18 per Million British Thermal Units (MMBTU). But analysts estimate that for gas supply from the Haynesville to grow to meet surging demand, prices will have to rise above $5. Several analysts, as well as the U.S. Energy Information Administration, project that Henry Hub prices will reach annual averages of $7 by the late 2030s.Decisionmakers in the U.S. and across the world can protect families from out-of-control energy costs by stopping the buildout of expensive gas projects, and investing in clean, affordable renewable energy instead. Transitioning to a just renewable energy system is also critical to creating good green jobs, reducing toxic fossil fuel pollution, and safeguarding communities from deadly climate disasters. Lorne Stockman, Research Director at Oil Change International, said: “Trump's policies are making everyone's lives more expensive while Big Tech and the fossil fuel industry cash in. Our research shows that the cost-of-living crisis will only escalate in the coming years if Congress and government agencies don’t intervene. Our leaders must stand up to Trump, phase out LNG exports, stop the reckless data center buildout, and transition the U.S. economy off of fossil fuels to make energy affordable again.”

President Donald Trump's awful jokes at the White House Correspondents Dinner last Friday earned him a sharp rebuke from comedian Jon Stewart on a new episode of "The Daily Show."Trump's speech at the dinner has been widely remembered for the ill-fated jabs he threw at CNN's Kaitlan Collins over her looks and over her choice to smile. But several other remarks seemed to send Trump's allies in the crowd into an existential crisis, Stewart noted. For instance, he pointed to Trump's joke about Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Stewart noted that Trump seemed to be setting up a punchline before diverting into a tangent about another topic altogether. Trump also repeated a claim that he hates Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA), who was one of the impeachment managers during Trump's first trial. "Traditionally, roasts work because at the heart of it all you only roast the ones you love," Stewart said. "Saying you hate someone in the middle of a joke really takes a lot of the pleasure ... Don Rickles might not have been so popular if he ended his act by saying 'No, seriously. F--- the Japanese.'"Stewart then played a montage of the crowd reacting to some of Trump's jokes. "It was a melange of confusion, boredom, shock, and at one point, a literal existential crisis," Stewart said. "Here's the one thing you never want at a comedy show: you never want them rethinking the choices that led them to that night."

France and Spain are battling catastrophic wildfires that have forced more than 350,000 people to evacuate their homes. The fires began in the southwest of France on Wednesday before spreading to Spain, where they have consumed more than 120,000 acres in what is now the most destructive fire in Spain’s recent history. Meanwhile, a new heat wave is expected to hit Europe this week, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Professor Ángel Luis Lara, who fled his home west of Madrid, says he considers his family “very lucky” because they managed to escape to safety. He says the wildfires are not just about extreme weather, but also “decades of neoliberal policies” that have diminished public services and the ability to respond to natural disasters. We also speak with journalist John Vaillant, author of Fire Weather, who says the climate crisis has created conditions that lead to destructive “megafires” like those in Europe, North America and beyond. “These conditions have been slowly building and worsening for decades, basically vindicating, unfortunately, the warnings of climate scientists and firefighters,” says Vaillant.
