Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky wrote in a statement Monday that he is still recovering from a fall in June and released a photo of himself in an apparent attempt to quell suspicion about his absence. The photo shows a smiling McConnell alongside his wife, Elaine Chao. It was reportedly taken on Sunday from a rehabilitation facility. Unlike the previous photo released, he is not holding a newspaper or any other item that might help verify when it was taken.'He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.' McConnell released a statement in the press release lamenting that he would not be able to attend the annual Fancy Farm Picnic, a massive church fundraiser in Kentucky that has been running for more than 140 years."I'm still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders," he wrote. "As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon," he added.The Office of the Attending Physician, the specialized unit that provides health care to members of Congress, also released a statement on his condition. "Since his discharge from hospital care, he has maintained a strenuous course of physical therapy and rehabilitation, including multiple sessions a day designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls," the office said. McConnell's bout with childhood polio continues to affect his health, the office added. "He is not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office," it concluded. Chao reportedly traveled to China days before McConnell's fall, and three days after his hospitalization, the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. shared a photo of Chao with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. She has since returned to Kentucky. Andy Beshear (D), "and my hope is that this provides him the opportunity to share the information in a transparent manner, direct from the source." Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) office released another photo and statement as part of a proof-of-life demand in its ongoing effort to dispute conspiracy theories that the one-time Republican leader is dead.McConnell's office released a photo two weeks ago of the former GOP Senate leader sitting in a hospital room chair next to his wife, former Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao, pointing to the sports section of The Washington Post. It has only sparked more conspiracy theories, even prompting late-night host John Oliver to ask whether he was really alive on his Sunday night show. In June, a 911 call was confirmed to be for McConnell, saying that he was in “cardiac arrest” and that CPR was being administered until EMS arrived. It also sparked a series of bizarre incidents that left folks scratching their heads.In the wake of the incident, Chao, flew to China mere days after McConnell was hospitalized. Upon her return, she was photographed by individuals outside the hospital wearing a long trench coat and a mask in 95-degree heat.In the new letter, McConnell appears to be sitting in another hospital chair with pillows behind him and Chao next to him. According to Punchbowl's Andrew Desiderio cited the McConnell statement saying he's “keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders.” The Office of the Attending Physician told Desiderio that McConnell has been “discharge[d] from hospital care” but is “not yet medically cleared to leave the rehab facility and return to the office.” The statement explained that his physical therapy is “designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls."According to McConnell's office, he suffered a fall in early June but didn't break anything or have a concussion. He has been in the hospital for over a month, however. McConnell said he won't make it to the "Fancy Farm" event in Kentucky on Saturday. He said "there's no place I'd rather be on the first Saturday in August than with the good people of western Kentucky feasting on pork and mutton."This year's picnic marks the 146th edition and is the largest in the state, reported The Courier-Journal.McConnell said his first time attending was 42 years ago when there weren't many Republicans around western Kentucky. He bragged that now it's a "sea of red. So, I hate that I'll miss the fun this year, but I'm sending my best wishes to the St. Jerome community for a successful picnic. As always, I appreciate all of your continued well wishes, and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon."

President Donald Trump’s crusade to pass the SAVE Act just took a weird turn. Trump took to Truth Social Monday to direct Senate Majority Leader John Thune to keep the chamber in session in order to pass a “full and deep throated SAVE AMERICA ACT.”Sorry, a full and what now? In his attempt to use an emphasized version of the term “full-throated,” Trump veered into an unintentional sexual innuendo (or possible Watergate reference). What clearer indication is there that we live in a postliterate world than that the president of the United States doesn’t feel the need to be careful with his words? Trump has repeatedly directed Republicans to pass the SAVE Act, but Thune has insisted that he doesn’t have the votes to pass the president’s signature voter suppression bill. If passed, the SAVE Act would require people to present proof of citizenship to register to vote, as well as specific types of photo ID when voting, which could create barriers for married women, Native Americans, and anyone who has changed their name. It would also severely restrict mail-in voting and require states to submit their voter rolls to a federal database riddled with errors. Thune is currently attempting to pass his third budget reconciliation bill that would contain $10 billion for election-related reforms, but Republicans remain divided.
