The Justice Department has opened a federal assault investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA).According to NOTUS, Swalwell already faces investigation by local prosecutors in New York, the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles, following allegations from five women that he engaged in sexual misconduct and assault with them, including a staffer who claims he assaulted her when she was severely intoxicated.A former staffer accused him of raping her while she was heavily intoxicated in a New York City hotel room in 2024, telling CNN: "I was pushing him off of me, saying no. A fifth accuser, Lonna Drewes, said Swalwell drugged, raped and choked her in 2018. Swalwell has categorically denied allegations of illegal conduct, but has acknowledged some unspecified "mistakes in judgment" and apologized to his family, staff and constituents over it.He abandoned his campaign for governor of California and resigned from Congress earlier this month, ahead of a planned vote to expel him from the House.
