Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) fumed Wednesday after a Democratic colleague shamed him for throwing Dr. Anthony Fauci's lawyer out of a Senate hearing.Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) delivered the rebuke at the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing — the same session where Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment and refused to answer questions.Paul, the committee chairman, had called the hearing to question Fauci about COVID-19 origins.Earlier in the session, attorney David Schertler tried to speak on Fauci's behalf after Fauci's opening statement. Paul refused to recognize him. "Another word and you're gone!" Paul warned — then had security escort Schertler from the room, which erupted in applause, according to hearing reports."His attorney has been gagged, thrown out of this hearing room, but he has written a letter to the chairman that is an explanation for the reasons why Dr. Fauci is, in fact, invoking his constitutional right," Blumenthal said when his turn came."This hearing is the culmination of a years-long crusade which started more than six years ago when Dr. Fauci dared to contradict President Donald Trump," Blumenthal added.Blumenthal then read from Schertler's letter, which cited Paul's own public statements — including social media posts calling to put Fauci "in jail" and demanding "a subpoena and a jail cell" — as evidence that the hearing was designed to trap Fauci in a criminal case, not gather information."This years-long public crusade against Dr. Fauci makes one thing clear," Blumenthal read. "You are single-mindedly fixated on seeing Dr. Fauci prosecuted for imaginary crimes, and you are so invested in that outcome that you have created a personal brand around it.""It is an insult to the memory of more than 1 million Americans who died from COVID-19," he continued. "America deserves better.""In no courtroom in America can you have your witness plead the Fifth Amendment, then have your attorney get to testify," Paul shot back. "That's what that letter is. You don't get to do that. I'm not gonna give you any information. You don't then get to put your lawyer forward to justify it.""He was not invited to testify, and he was out of order, and it was appropriate to have him ejected," Paul said.Paul separately warned Fauci there would be "repercussions" for refusing to answer questions after being directed by the chairman to do so.

Lindsey Graham (R-SC) for getting the "last laugh" against him during his speech at Graham's funeral on Tuesday.Graham and Trump had a contentious relationship early in Trump's political career, but things seemed to smooth out between them over time. In a blow to voters everywhere, a federal appeals court just made it easier for President Donald Trump to suppress mail-in voting. The midterms are three months away.The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit affirmed a lower court’s decision Tuesday, arguing that a Democratic lawsuit challenging Trump’s mail-in voting executive order was premature. This result could have disastrous implications for the upcoming midterm elections: Not only does Trump’s executive order direct the Department of Homeland Security to create a national citizenship registry list, but it also orders the U.S. Postal Service to withhold mail-in ballots from states that don’t share voter registration data with the federal government.“Cheating on mail-in voting is legendary. It’s horrible, what’s gone on,” Trump said while signing the order in March. “Democrats want to use it for cheating.… I think this will help a lot with elections.”In reality, mail-in voting is proven to be a secure and reliable method used by hundreds of thousands of voters across the political spectrum. The president himself has voted by mail in recent elections—but it’s OK when he does it, he says, “because I’m president.”This new ruling from the D.C. Circuit comes only one day after Trump’s Department of Justice asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on the issue, calling the Democratic legal challenge “premature” and “hypothetical” because Trump’s executive order hasn’t yet been entirely implemented into DHS or USPS policy.The administration’s language is reflected in Tuesday’s D.C. Circuit court ruling, which argues that the Democratic plaintiffs are concerned with “the lawfulness of proposed actions if implemented on the threshold of the upcoming federal election,” rather than actions that have already happened. In other words, Trump’s executive order might be breaking the law, but the court isn’t comfortable saying so until it’s too late.“If the defendant agencies take steps to implement the Executive Order in a manner that violates federal law or the Constitution, Plaintiffs can promptly seek relief,” the decision says.Trump’s attack on mail-in voting goes hand in hand with the SAVE Act, a massive voter suppression bill Trump is trying to ram through the Senate this week.
