The idea to suspend that right – at least, for undocumented migrants – came from White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, as was detailed in the forthcoming book viewed by the Times.“When it came to suspending habeas corpus, one of the most powerful constitutional protections of individual rights, Mr. Miller was in effect encouraging something Mr. Trump had long dreamed of: bypassing judges in deportation cases,” the Times’ report reads.“The president was interested. He asked advisers about Abraham Lincoln’s suspension of habeas rights during the Civil War. Mr. Miller directed the Justice Department to study the issue.”As the discussions turned “serious,” the Times reported, White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf penned a memo for White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles with the subject line: “The Writ of Habeas Corpus.”“Dated April 29, 2025, and stamped ‘confidential,’ the memo was careful and lawyerly but amounted to a warning against end-running the rule of law,” The Times wrote, describing the “secret” memo.“A senior administration official, speaking on background because the official was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said for this article that ‘senior staff’ had requested the memos, and that they were seen by relatively few people,” The Times’ report reads.“But the documents reflected alarm among a small group of senior aides. They felt that Mr. Miller’s eagerness to test the limits of executive power – and to accuse other branches of encroaching on it, echoing a president who bristled at any constraint – risked steering the administration, and the country, in a dangerous direction.”

Jeffrey Epstein paid a Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy cash and Disney tickets for favorable jail treatment, his former assistant told Congress, per a new report.Sarah Kellen, a longtime personal assistant to the convicted sex offender, testified before the House Oversight Committee on May 21, per a transcript reviewed by the Miami Herald.Kellen also told the committee Epstein abused her from behind bars — using a jail computer to Skype her and force her to undress on camera, Raw Story reported.It marks the first time a specific deputy has been named in connection with alleged payments at the Palm Beach County Stockade, where Epstein was held from 2008 to 2009."I know that he arranged to have cash and, like, Disneyland tickets, taken to one of the officers in the jail and I'm not sure what he received with that," Kellen testified. She identified the deputy as Michael Fox.She learned of the arrangement because Epstein's paralegal, Story Cowles, complained about having to personally drive to deliver the cash and tickets.Fox retired from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office in 2020, and a spokeswoman said the prior investigation never surfaced the allegation."The Epstein investigation did not reveal these allegations, and they were never investigated in connection with that case," spokeswoman Therese Barbera said.Epstein served his sentence in a private wing of the Palm Beach County Stockade.Three and a half months in, he was granted work release — leaving jail 12 hours a day, six days a week.His company paid roughly $130,000 in overtime to deputies who were told to call him their "client.""I was afraid that that would happen. [Epstein] was so smooth. He was trying to hook me in, and that wasn't going to happen," said Michael Gauger, who supervised the jail during Epstein's tenure."If that had come out, he would have been put on isolation and lost his privileges," he further added.The Florida Department of Law Enforcement's 2021 investigation found no wrongdoing by sheriff's office members — but that probe predates Kellen's allegation about Fox. The sheriff's office said it has no plans to reopen.

Those aren’t the individuals that are coming across our border, those are individuals that are still inside this country."FISA Section 702 expired over the weekend because Republicans linked it to the confirmation of Bill Pulte as Director of National Intelligence. Pulte had no experience in national security and frequently presented himself as a political fixer for Trump, so Democrats blocked the bill so that way it would not lead to Pulte’s confirmation."I hope and pray to God that nothing happens in this country where an American is killed," Sen. Roger Marshall (R-KS) said, “We want to prevent the next 9/11 from happening.”Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), "This program goes dark at a time when there are literally hundreds of thousands of people coming to this country for the World Cup.”By contrast, some senators are arguing that the legislation creating FISA keeps the program functional even after its authorization expires."Data can still be collected for a year after it expires. So I don't think it's as dire as some think it is," Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) argued. Similarly Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) said that “(FISA) will not lapse. I try to make this clear. The statute makes it clear that the authorities of FISA are going to be positive and enforceable for the remainder of this year. We think, until March of next year.” Likewise Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) said that "FISA is operative until next March. That's the legislation.”George Croner, a former National Security Agency counsel, said that "It's a very inopportune time to allow the authorizing statute for 702 to lapse. It has proven to be the most useful by far of any of the intelligence programs that the community has available to it."On Sunday, Axios journalist Andrew Pantazi reported that “Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is among the government's most contested surveillance authorities, long opposed by privacy advocates and supported by security hawks” and yet its future “hinges on Trump's unrelated demands for a voting bill.”"I'm against FISA if it doesn't come with The Save America Act (Full version!) firmly attached to it," Trump recently wrote in a social media post. He also defended choosing Pulte, although reports indicate he is searching for a replacement.“Congressional Republicans are largely leaving it to the administration to figure out a path forward after Trump’s decision to tap Pulte as Tulsi Gabbard’s temporary successor derailed an earlier agreement to extend the key spy authority for three years,” Politico reported on Monday. “But they are also nudging the administration to pick a different nominee to fill the role in a permanent capacity. Pulte is among the subjects Speaker Mike Johnson is expected to discuss with Trump at the White House Tuesday, according to two people granted anonymity to disclose plans for the private meeting.”
