Senate Republicans are scrambling for a strategy to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, a sweeping election reform bill, along with $67 billion to $350 billion in defense spending after holding a contentious meeting with President Trump this week.
A group of Democrats identifying as moderate say they are organizing to oppose the extremist policies of the far right as well as those of the socialists on the far left. The moderate-identifying Democrats are unhappy about the recent victories of far-left extremists in places like New York City, where Democratic incumbents lost in primaries this week. About a dozen moderate-identifying Democrats signed on the pledge at the "Promise to America" website.'Americans want safe communities and institutions that solve problems. We believe in building more to lower costs and expand opportunity.'Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York appeared on Fox News to publicize the effort."You know there are certain things that I believe in that are not being reflected in the current environment, especially with some of these races on Tuesday," said Suozzi."As we said in our pledge, we're for capitalism, not socialism. We're for safety, not lawlessness. We're proud of America, not ashamed of America — and we need to be promoting those things," he added. "The far left and the far right, you know, they're all very well organized. But those of us that don't support those far-left or far-right principles need to do a better job organizing and getting our message out.""America is stronger than our politics. Politics forces false choices between extremes on right and left. We reject them," the group said in the pledge."Too many Americans have not benefited from the last half-century of economic growth," they added. "Americans want an economy that lowers costs, expands opportunity, and rewards the people who work hard every day. Americans want safe communities and institutions that solve problems. We believe in building more to lower costs and expand opportunity. We believe Democrats succeed when we speak to the whole country and value persuasion over purity."The website asks supporters of the cause to sign the pledge as well.RELATED: Hunter Biden wants Democrats to learn EXTREME lesson from NYC elections The victories of far-left socialists backed by Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have been seen by many as a revolution in the Democratic Party. Some, like Hunter Biden, have opined that the victories mean the Democratic Party needs to lurch into the far left and push harder for socialism. Other Democrats who signed onto the moderate-identifying agenda include Rep. Adam Gray of California, Rep. Laura Gillen of New York, Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan, and Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, among others. Like Blaze News? Bypass the censors, sign up for our newsletters, and get stories like this direct to your inbox. Sign up here!
Jack Goldsmith, who previously served as the assistant attorney general for the Office of Legal Counsel under President George W. Bush, is issuing a stark warning Republican senators not to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general. Thus far, Blanche has been auditioning for the attorney general gig, CNN said, by issuing indictments of President Donald Trump's political foes, whether or not they'll even make it to trial. Blanche was a former personal lawyer to Trump in a failed criminal defense against 34 felony fraud charges in New York. As Politico stated in April, Blanche is a "Trump loyalist who relishes every opportunity to pick a fight on the president’s behalf."“The DOJ is not a personal law firm, yet Donald Trump has installed another one of his former personal defense lawyers to lead the DOJ,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) wrote on social media at the time. “His blind allegiance to Trump is not a qualification for the job. He is wholly unfit to lead the DOJ.”The objections appear to also spread to conservatives like Goldsmith. Gregg Nunziata, the executive director for the Society for the Rule of Law, flagged Goldsmith's comments on X Friday. "If the Senate confirms Blanche, it’s not just confirming someone as attorney general; it’s endorsing Trump weaponization. That’s what’s at stake in the Senate confirmation: whether the Senate will exercise what I believe are its responsibilities to ensure that law enforcement isn’t abused. This is one very important check on that," Nunziata wrote."Now, to be clear," he added, "Blanche is going to be acting as attorney general one way or the other. But the question is whether the Senate will endorse what's been going on."Goldsmith and Bauer compared it to the nomination of Bill Pulte for the director of national intelligence post, which Trump withdrew and replaced with another appointee whom some also consider unqualified. The conversation was part of a discussion with former White House Counsel under President Barack Obama, Bob Bauer for his Substack and comes before former Attorney General Bill Barr wrote his glowing endorsement of Blanche for the Wall Street Journal. Democrats hold a "secret weapon" heading into this fall's midterm elections, according to CNN's Harry Enten.Health care costs have surged past gas prices, food and housing to become Americans' single biggest financial concern, Enten said, and Democrats hold a decisive advantage over Republicans on that topic."This, to me, is the Democrats' secret weapon," he said.According to Enten's analysis of polling data, 22 percent of Americans cite healthcare as their primary financial worry, well ahead of food at 18 percent, housing at 14 percent and gas prices at just 8 percent, and highlighted the finding as particularly notable given the outsized media attention typically paid to gas prices in affordability discussions. The numbers get worse for the Trump administration from there, Enten said. Its net approval rating on healthcare costs sits 36 points underwater, with disapproval far outpacing approval. Among independents — a group already showing signs of frustration with the administration — that gap widens dramatically to 50 points underwater, a figure Enten called striking."So you see, you know Trump really struggling here, but here, even with the obvious, there's an interesting little nugget going on here," he said.Enten pointed to a substantial Democratic advantage in trust on the issue. Democrats currently hold a 21-point edge over Republicans on health care, he noted — larger than the 17-point advantage they held in 2018, when health care-driven momentum helped the party secure a net gain of 40 House seats during Trump's first midterm cycle.Much of the current frustration traces back to early 2026, when enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies that millions of Americans relied on were not extended, according to Enten. Prediction markets have grown increasingly pessimistic about a reversal: Enten noted that betting markets gave a 43 percent chance in January that the subsidies would eventually be extended, but that figure has since collapsed to just 7 percent.Taken together, Enten argued, the data — high public anxiety over health care costs, the administration's weak approval numbers, and Democrats' growing trust advantage — closely resemble the conditions that fueled the party's strong performance in 2018."It will be interesting to see if Democrats really try to re-engage with that issue," Enten said. "They absolutely should be running on health care. It is a big win for them." - YouTube youtu.be
