Trump Fires Democratic Attorney After Less Than an Hour

The White House has found a novel way to ensure Donald Trump’s nominees ascend to power.Federal judges in the Western District of Washington swore in former King County Superior Court Judge Roger Rogoff as U.S. attorney Wednesday morning. Within 54 minutes, Trump fired him.The district’s 17 federal judges have been trying to find a replacement for Seattle’s First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd, after Trump failed to formally nominate him. Floyd was appointed in October, though his name was never officially advanced to the Senate for consideration.Federal law grants a district’s judges the power to appoint a U.S. attorney if the president and the acting attorney general fail to do so within 120 days, subsequently stonewalling the procedural Senate hearings.Instead, Floyd became an interim U.S. attorney and, later, the first assistant, in an attempt to “sidestep the nomination process,” according to The Seattle Times.Rogoff told the newspaper that he was waiting in the lobby of the U.S. District Courthouse downtown to meet with Floyd when he received an email notifying him he’d been fired.“We are working on legal action right now,” Rogoff said. The legal team representing the former federal prosecutor is expected to sue the administration and the Department of Justice, according to the Times.The White House has taken a heavy interest in the regional position. One month after returning to office, Trump inexplicably fired Tessa Gormon, another court-appointed prosecutor. Gormon, too, represented the Western District of Washington and was ultimately replaced by Floyd.Donald Kinsella, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of New York, also faced the ire of the White House earlier this year for daring to do his job unclouded by the interests of the administration. Kinsella was appointed in February by a panel of federal judges, but much like Rogoff, was fired within hours.The New York State Bar Association condemned Kinsella’s abrupt ousting, describing acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s interference at the time as an “insult to separation of powers and the administration of justice.”“While it is hardly surprising given the president’s regular abandonment of even the veneer of independence for the DOJ, it is no less appalling,” the organization wrote in a statement.Blanche is currently in the midst of his own confirmation hearings to officially take on the role of attorney general. Hundreds of former federal prosecutors—including some of his own ex-colleagues—have urged the Senate to deny him the opportunity.

Adam Schiff (D-CA) pressed Blanche on whether the settlement also shielded Trump from liability tied to his criminal conviction for falsifying business records."You put your name on this. That absolves the president of tax liabilities in the past. The president was convicted in the case you represented him in," Schiff said."That's not what he was convicted of," Blanche replied."If the president is conspiring with others to falsify business records to help them cheat on taxes, he is also exposed to liability," Schiff pressed. "You know that as well as I do.""He can't be audited for that," Blanche said."Of course he can," Schiff fired back.Schiff then turned to the settlement itself, calling it a "staggering example of self-dealing" by a man who had represented Trump personally before joining the government to represent the IRS."You made the decision to not defend the IRS and the Justice Department. You made the decision to sign this slush fund agreement," Schiff said."We made the decision to settle the case. Correct," Blanche replied."The court found it was a sham," Schiff said. "What happened to the Todd Blanche who was a prosecutor in the Southern District of New York? What happened to the prosecutor people had respect for?"Schiff said Blanche had become "someone willing to say the president has both the right and the duty to prosecute his political enemies.""What happened to you, Todd Blanche?" Schiff demanded. "I think Robert Caro had it right when he said that power doesn't corrupt as much as it reveals.""I am the same exact person I was when I was a federal prosecutor in the SDNY," Blanche insisted, using the abbreviation for the Southern District of New York. "Do the right thing, enforce the laws, and put bad guys in jail."

But behind the scenes, his administration was cooperating with Iran for one specific reason: deportations.According to The New York Times, sworn affidavits "provide a detailed account of behind-the-scenes contacts that led the United States to deport more than 100 Iranians to Tehran between September 2025 and January 2026, not long before the initiation of U.S. military action against Iran in February."The Iranian American Legal Defense Fund alleges that in the process, the Trump administration violated the law to share confidential information with the Islamic Republic, endangering the deportees' lives and subjecting them to persecution in their country of origin.All of this unfolded despite the fact that "the United States and Iran have had no formal diplomatic relationship since 1979, and America has generally welcomed people seeking refuge from persecution by the Iranian government," noted the report.Cyrus Mehri, a workplace discrimination lawyer who co-founded the IALDF last year, "described a phone call and meeting this March with an unnamed Iranian official" who claims to have been in long-term contact with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "Mr. Mehri stated that the contact had started with an 'unsolicited and unexpected' call from the official, whom he had met previously, and who proceeded to share his views about the discussions to deport Iranians, even after Mr. Mehri informed him that they were working 'on opposite sides' of the issue."All of this comes as the Iran war continues to rage, with no end in sight and disastrous consequences for global energy markets.It also comes as ICE is under a fresh wave of mounting public outrage, after traffic stops in Houston and Maine ended in agents killing people who weren't even their targets. ICE briefly paused traffic stops in response to outcry, but resumed them again from orders on high given by Trump.

Few leaders have the opportunity to redefine an iconic company while simultaneously shaping the future of an industry," reads the letter, signed by Tennessee Deputy Governor Stuart McWhorter. "As you look ahead, I encourage you to consider Tennessee as the home for that future."The Hollywood Reporter noted that Ellison used to live on and off in Tennessee for 11 years from 2014 to 2025. The Reporter added that Oracle, the tech company owned by Larry Ellison, plans on building a massive campus in Nashville, and Clay Magouyrk, the co-CEO of Oracle, lives in Tennessee. Warner Bros. Discovery also used to maintain an office complex in Knoxville after a 2017 Scripps Network deal. Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of the historic Hollywood studio, sold the property in 2023, according to The Hollywood Reporter."Tennessee offers a compelling proposition: a state where creativity and technology converge, where talent is developed intentionally, and where innovation is embraced," the letter promised.

Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), who dropped in for an interview on "All In."This kind of order, noted Hayes, is "so rare," and "the case itself stunk to high heaven from the beginning, it seemed obviously pretextual ... but here's a guy who's going to come before the committee to be the most important lawyer in the country. And a federal judge has just said that the bar should investigate him and possibly disbar him."Whitehouse agreed, comparing the situation to the GOP's confirmation of Trump's former attorney, Emil Bove, to be an appellate judge even while he was being investigated for contempt of court. "Rather than wait until that was resolved, they jammed him through before it could be resolved, so they didn't have to know the result of it," he said.
