A CNN panel had a good laugh as a GOP pundit twisted himself in a "pretzel" defending the Trump family.While discussing recent revelations about how much money Trump and his family made since returning to office last year, conservative podcaster Ben Ferguson had everyone around him in stitches.Ferguson, the host of "The Ben Ferguson Show," argued that the Trump family isn't corrupt for its involvement in billion-dollar ventures involving cryptocurrency and tungsten mining because they were engaged in "actual business."CNN anchor Abby Phillip, who described the Trump family as "real estate developers," shot back by asking, "What do the Trump sons know about mining rare earth minerals? What do the Trump sons know about robotics?"Ferguson's response was, "A lot, clearly, they made a lot of money off of it because they actually invest in it."The panel around him, which included political analyst and attorney Bakari Sellers, former Biden White House staffer Yemisi Egbewole, and former Bush White House official Ashley Davis, could be heard laughing together as Ferguson responded.Sellers chimed in by remarking, "I do hot yoga, and I feel like you're doing a little hot yoga too for that pretzel you got yourself in," which led to Egbewole and Davis laughing more."The president makes $400,000 a year," Sellers pointed out. "This quarter, he's made over $1 billion on crypto alone...that fundamentally is unethical. You can call it what you want."While Sellers mentioned Trump's presidential salary, Ferguson threw in one more defense: "he gives it all away," which also caused laughter around the table.

Governments Are Spending $1.1 Trillion Propping Up the Fossil Fuel Industry While Households Pay the Price

As 350.org, Fuel Poverty Action and coalition partners today demonstrate against rising energy prices outside the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, a new report from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) lays bare the true scale of the fossil fuel subsidy crisis: governments worldwide are on course to spend $1.1 trillion propping up the fossil fuel industry in 2026, a figure that could rise to $1.43 trillion if oil prices reach $110 a barrel. The UNDP report, Military Escalation in the Middle East: Cushioning the Global Shock, finds that governments have responded to conflict-driven oil price spikes by expanding fossil fuel subsidies, price caps and tax rebates. While these measures offer short-term relief, they are consuming public budgets that should be building schools, hospitals and clean energy infrastructure. Many developing countries entered the latest crisis already burdened by rising debt, and fossil fuel handouts to keep prices artificially low are depleting public budgets and increasing their risk of debt distress.Anne Jellema, Executive Director of 350.org, said:"The $1.1 trillion that governments are pouring into fossil fuel subsidies this year is not a safety net, it is a ransom payment. Every dollar spent shielding the fossil fuel industry from the consequences of its own price volatility is a dollar not spent on the clean energy systems that can bring costs down for good.We need a phase out to end public subsidies for fossil fuel companies, and a permanent windfall tax on fossil fuel profits. Not a one-off levy, but a permanent, legislated mechanism that redirects the extraordinary profits of an industry driving this crisis into the just transition every country needs. That means affordable clean energy, retrofitted homes, and funding to protect people from the extreme weather unleashed by fossil pollution..”The UNDP report calls for easier access to international climate financing and accelerated investment in renewable energy, and explicitly frames energy security and the energy transition as inseparable.

A bipartisan briefing on the Iran ceasefire deal turned tense when President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff reportedly berated a Democratic congresswoman and cut off her microphone after she pressed him on the details of the agreement.Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA) said she asked Witkoff direct questions about who authored the 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran and why its terms appeared to favor Tehran from the start, and she also asked how much of his time as envoy was actually devoted to U.S. diplomatic work versus his own business interests, reported The Daily Beast.“How much of your work in the region is for the United States of America and resolving these issues, and how much of your time is being spent on your own ventures?” Dean said. “That, I think, really ticked them off, and that’s when I got cut off. As I said, they cut off my mic. They had not done that to other people, and so I didn’t get to have a rebuttal.”Witkoff, a real estate investor with no prior diplomatic experience, has taken a lead role in negotiating foreign policy alongside Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and Dean complained that the Trump pal was vague about Iran's uranium and an offer to allow the country to access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund.“I was simply asking tough questions about who wrote the MOU, why does it sound so in favor of Iran, and from literally paragraph one, we’re already out of sync with what was to happen,” Dean said.Speaking afterward, Dean argued the war with Iran as reckless and unconstitutional, and reminded Republican colleagues on the call that more than a dozen American service members have died in the conflict since late February, with hundreds more wounded and significant civilian casualties across the region.Dean also raised concerns about Witkoff's dual role as a businessman and presidential envoy, suggesting it warrants closer scrutiny. She said she expects that scrutiny to come in the form of formal oversight if Democrats win back the House majority in November.The congresswoman compared her call with Witkoff to a separate bipartisan dinner she attended that evening at the Qatari embassy, where she said diplomats from Qatar, Oman and Saudi Arabia struck a far more cooperative tone, expressing a desire to work within the existing agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while keeping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.“So it was a jarring contrast,” she said. “I’m talking with literally our alleged envoy and diplomat. They were not diplomatic with us. They were not forthcoming with us, and we had a very robust conversation at the embassy this evening.”The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment on Dean's account of the call.
