President Donald Trump clashed behind the scenes with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin over this year's July 4 celebration.The DHS chief — brought in to stabilize a department reeling from a turbulent first year under predecessor Kristi Noem — has found himself repeatedly at odds with the president who tapped him for the job earlier this year, reported The Free Press."He has made several moves that caused tension within the administration," the report stated, "including between himself and President Donald Trump."One recent "clash" centered on the White House's "Salute to America 250" celebration on the National Mall, which Trump had promoted for months as one of the grandest events in American history.When multiple officials recommended calling off the event as severe weather moved into the area – and Mullin issued a directive. But the president personally overruled Mullin, and after an hours-long delay and temporary evacuation of attendees, he took the stage after 11 p.m. to deliver remarks and watch the fireworks.Trump later wrote on social media that he had "immediately overturned" the cancellation decision, and the White House's public statement praising the event's success notably did not dispute reports of Trump's private anger at Mullin.Less than two weeks later, Trump overruled Mullin again — this time over an internal memo instructing ICE agents to stop making arrests at traffic stops. Mullin had reportedly issued the directive after speaking with Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) about the fatal shooting of a Colombian immigrant and food delivery driver by an ICE agent in Collins's home state of Maine.The policy reversal angered immigration hardliners, prompting Trump to publicly declare on Truth Social that the administration "cannot give up" traffic stops as an enforcement tool, warning that doing so would "play right into the criminal's hands."The department faces external pressure from immigration hawks concerned about transparency in deportation statistics, including a lawsuit from a conservative-aligned nonprofit over unfulfilled public records requests. At the same time, DHS appears to be taking steps to appease hardline critics, including new airport arrests of noncitizens with expired visas and a proposed $100,000 fee on a visa extension program for STEM students — though the White House cautioned that no such policy has been finalized.Adding to the pressure, Mullin has reportedly become "paranoid" about internal leaks, including the circulation of a personal résumé belonging to Trump's ICE director nominee, Lance Schroyer, which drew unflattering media coverage.DHS has denied opening a formal investigation into the leak but emphasized the safety risks posed by staff having personal information exposed publicly.

A conservative lawyer explained that President Donald Trump waited years to make his key defense in a defamation case because he "forgot" it.During an episode of The Illegal News, congressional candidate and former MAGA insider George Conway talked about Trump's case against E. Jean Carroll. The Trump administration's Solicitor General recently asked the Supreme Court to overturn Carroll's successful $83.3 million defamation lawsuit against Trump.The Solicitor General is arguing that Trump isn't liable for the defamatory statements he made against Carroll because he was president when he made them.The argument is based on the idea of presidential immunity, but Trump didn't make the argument earlier because he "forgets to assert the immunity" during the original proceedings, Conway said while recounting the timeline."Now he's arguing that this judgment should be reversed," Conway said. "Even though he didn't make the presidential immunity argument for like three or four years."Conway argued that Trump can't revive an immunity defense he sat on for years, comparing it to the way lawmakers can't waive and then reclaim the immunity that protects their official speech. Trump is "a big boy" who should have known to raise it first, Conway said.The reason the argument never came up during the original proceedings, Conway said, was that Trump's former attorney, Alina Habba, shot it down. Trump's team instead spent years fighting on separate grounds tied to the Westfall Act, which drove the case into what Conway called a "procedural morass."Conway added that it would be "remarkable" if the Supreme Court decided to take the case, saying the justices avoid fact-heavy disputes.

The Trump administration suffered two losses in one day, with a Trump appointee delivering one of the blows, per a legal reporter.According to Politico senior legal affairs correspondent Kyle Cheney, the Trump administration's "unprecedented mass detention policy" aimed at immigrants suffered its fifth straight appellate court loss hours before a Trump appointee handed it a sixth. "The dam has broken," Cheney wrote in a post on X reviewing the losses so far. "Six federal appeals courts in a row have now shot down ICE's mass detention policy, along with a 469-54 split against the administration among district judges."The latest loss came from the California-based 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, which ruled 2-1 against the Trump administration's mass detention policy carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The Trump-appointed Judge Daniel Bress wrote the opinion in "the most significant rejection yet of the Trump administration's unprecedented mass detention policy," as Cheney described the ruling in his reporting for Politico.According to Cheney, Bress found that the Trump administration had misconstrued a 1996 immigration law to justify its mass detention policy. The Trump administration's interpretation "has resulted in detained aliens filing thousands of habeas petitions in federal courts across the country, seeking bond hearings and possible release from detention," Bress wrote.The other setback came from the Illinois-based 7th Circuit Court of Appeals, which also ruled 2-1 and found that the Trump administration "defied logic" to justify mass detention. Biden appointee Judge Joshua Kolar noted the volume of prior judicial writing in his opinion, stating, "We add but a few more drops of ink to the gallons already spilled."
