Legal expert shares sobering warning after Trump's big court loss: 'Not the end'

A legal expert shared a sobering warning on Thursday about President Donald Trump's continued efforts to dismantle birthright citizenship after the Supreme Court rebuffed his latest attempt. Cody Wofsy, deputy director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project, told Michael Popok, a lawyer and host of "The Intersection" podcast, on a recent episode that the Trump administration's birthright citizenship case was "just the tip of the spear." Last year, the administration signed an executive order stripping birthright citizenship from people who are born in the country but whose parents are here illegally. The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 on Wednesday that the executive order was unconstitutional. Wofsy warned during the interview that the Supreme Court's decision is not the end of the road for the Trump administration's efforts. "What cases like the Birthright decision show is that we can keep fighting and we can win these fights," Wofsy said. "There are battles so fundamental and central to who we are as a country that we can overcome.""I hope that gives some hope to those who may be feeling a little hopeless in this moment, but I also don't want to at all undercut that this is an incredibly frightening and demoralizing time for so many people in our communities," he continued. "This is an example of our allies, our communities, the American people, who stood up and said no to this idea of rewriting a fundamental constitutional guarantee, and we held the line in this case," he added. "It's an example of why we have to keep fighting, but it is by far not the end of the fight."

Trump's latest economic figures raise red flags for CNN analyst: 'Defying logic'

The latest economic figures for President Donald Trump's economy raised all sorts of red flags for one analyst on Thursday. The Department of Labor reported that just 57,000 jobs were added to the U.S. economy over the last three months, which is far below the 129,000 jobs that were cited in the last report. The unemployment rate also dropped to 4.2%, which is often a sign of a healthy economy, but the numbers were not comforting to David Goldman, CNN's senior business reporter. Goldman reacted to the numbers on "CNN News Central" on Thursday. He noted that the data suggest certain sectors of the economy, such as health care and hospitality, are struggling to hire workers. For instance, he noted that just 22,000 nursing jobs had been added over the last year, far below the 38,000 added at this time last year. "That is something that we need to watch," Goldman said. He also noted that the figures showed a significant decline in hospitality hiring, which seemed hard to believe because multiple cities are hosting World Cup games. "I think, and there are a number of economists who are smarter than me who think, that this might change as we get those revisions in the future months, because this is kind of defying logic and defining what we can see with our own eyes," Goldman said.

'Disappointed': Fox Business crew frets as Trump hit with poor economic numbers

The Fox Business team was greeted with bad news on Thursday as job numbers came in shockingly low."We came in underneath expectations," said Cheryl Casone. "We came in at 50,000 nonfarm jobs. The Street was looking for 110,000. The unemployment rate fell to 4.2 percent, down from 4.3 percent, which it had been holding steady at for about three months."Furthermore, she noted, the underemployment rate, or rate that includes people who are working in lower-pay or lower-hours jobs that don't use all their skills, is 7.9 percent — and payrolls from earlier in the year were revised down by over 70,000. And health care and social assistance went up, but leisure and hospitality jobs went down.This isn't the report Wall Street wanted, Casone noted — and when Maria Bartiromo tried to spin it as a "Goldilocks story" because the Dow Jones went up slightly on the news, right-wing economic analyst and former Trump adviser Stephen Moore disagreed."Well, I'm just looking at some of the other numbers, and look, I mean I'm a little disappointed in this, frankly," said Moore. "If you look at the household survey, it showed half a million fewer Americans working. So I'm a little puzzled by this."
