Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has posted two images from the hospital to show proof of life, amid swirling speculation about his declining health.But former GOP strategist turned Lincoln Project co-founder Steve Schmidt doesn't buy it — and told Joanna Coles on The Daily Beast Podcast this week that he is convinced there is a cover-up underway.“Here’s my advice to the Mitch McConnell team: get lawyers,” said Schmidt. “I think this is a fraud that’s being perpetrated upon the taxpayer and whatever statute is applicable. I think there’s a high likelihood that what they’re doing here is illegal. I don’t think that Mitch McConnell is alive... I don’t think he’s sentient.”McConnell, who previously served as Senate Republican Leader and was an overbearing presence in national politics, was rushed to the hospital weeks ago over what has been described as a cardiac arrest event. Aides insist McConnell is recovering but acknowledge he is a long way from returning to work.The bottom line, said Schmidt, is that “I don’t think Mitch McConnell’s walking out of the hospital.”Under Kentucky law, passed recently by Republicans, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear would not have any power to appoint an interim senator if McConnell passes away, and a special election would have to take place immediately.Beshear has faced calls from some Democratic activists to do more to demand proof of life from McConnell, but Schmidt pointed out people need to be realistic.The governor “can’t show up at the hospital and declare, ‘It’s I, Andy Beshear, governor of the Commonwealth, let me into the room.’ Right?” said Schmidt. “And by the way, Andy Beshear’s not in that political party that wants to be in your hospital room with you at the moment of birth, at the moment of death; that’s peering through the bedroom window.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune offered a rare glimpse into the strain of leading a Republican conference under constant pressure from President Donald Trump.The president has put Thune under what Politico calls "vise-like pressure" to kill the filibuster rule and pass his election bill.“He thinks I can wave the magic wand,” Thune told Politico. “I wish it were that easy.”The comment came during a Wednesday interview in Thune's Capitol office, at almost the exact moment Trump was telling reporters in the Oval Office that Thune "has the votes" to eliminate the Senate filibuster and pass a Republican-backed elections overhaul. Thune, unaware of Trump's remarks as he spoke, flatly disputed that characterization, saying he is nowhere near having the support needed to kill the filibuster or move the legislation Trump wants.Thune told Politico he was simply reporting the math of a closely divided Senate. He argued that Trump's active involvement in this year's primaries has also shaped the current makeup of the conference and, by extension, the votes available to him now.Compounding the challenge is the death of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who functioned as a trusted go-between capable of leveling with Trump directly. Thune called that loss significant, noting Graham could speak candidly to the president in ways few others could.Thune maintained that his relationship with Trump remains functional, insisting the two "get along" even as he absorbs the brunt of the president's impatience with the chamber's limits. He's simultaneously trying to advance a government funding bill, a Russia sanctions package, judicial and executive nominees, and possible movement on cryptocurrency and college sports legislation — all before senators leave for a five-week recess.Politico then asked the GOP leader about Trump's questioning whether he was “the man for the job” of leading Senate Republicans. Thune gave a surprising answer. "[If Trump could find somebody else to do this job," he said, "it might be a big relief.”

Scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is turning into the child nobody wants with two major campaign funders waiting for the other to step into the breach.The Republican Party's top spending committees are locked in a "high-stakes game of chicken" over Paxton's floundering Senate campaign—each hoping the other will kick in tens of millions needed to save his sinking candidacy."Somebody is going to have to spend big money," said Dan Eberhart, an oil executive fundraising for Paxton, told the Times. "We'll see who blinks."The calculus is brutal. Texas demands approximately $15 million weekly in super PAC advertising for a credible campaign—making it a resource drain compared to cheaper battlegrounds with equal strategic value. Republican strategists are increasingly questioning whether Paxton is worth the investment.According to the report, "Mr. Paxton finds himself in a unique situation among Senate candidates, according to interviews with a dozen Republicans with ties to his campaign. Republican donors still hold grudges from a bruising primary. The state, with its 18-plus television markets, is an epically expensive setting. And his Democratic opponent, James Talarico, has proved to be a particularly strong fund-raiser."Paxton is also being shunned by Washington campaign cash rainmakers."National Republican groups are slated to spend tens of millions of dollars this summer and fall in every other top-tier Senate race, including in some states that prominent handicappers think are not as competitive as Texas," the Times is reporting. "They even plan to spend more in noncompetitive Kansas. In most states, Republicans are expected to outspend Democrats — for instance in Ohio, where the G.O.P. commitment totals over $100 million."The Times notes that "the amount of Republican spending planned in Texas from now through Election Day, according to AdImpact, a media tracking firm: $0."
