Republicans worried about preserving their House or Senate majorities in November are wishing for the miracle of low gas prices, but recent surveys show they needn’t bother. Their goose is already cooked, regardless of where fuel prices go.When you’re down this far it’s nearly impossible to pull out of the dive, and after several new polls dropped this week, President Donald Trump hit the worst approval rating of his presidency. He also whacked a new low two days in a row with a FiftyPlusOne approval of 36 percent, amounting to a net score of −25.This is a historically bad rating for a president at this point in his term — worse than Biden’s at this point in 2022, and worse than Trump’s in his first term. It’s so bad now, that analyst G. Elliot Morris says falling gas prices won’t rescue Trump — or the Republican Party.“Cheaper gas didn’t buy him much, if anything at all,” said Morris, seeing Trump’s popularity fail to lift out of the doldrums despite a brief drop in gas prices this summer.Generally, a president’s approval drops as gas prices go up. Prices spiked from $3 to $4.50 on average this spring thanks to Trump’s entirely voluntary war on Iran. It dropped to an average of $3.78 in early July when Trump and his media puffed up an Iran “ceasefire.” But national averages jumped back to $4.10 a gallon when that ceasefire evaporated.It’s been a few weeks and the numbers are in, and what struck analysts was how low Trump’s approval remained even as he enjoyed a premature price dip before his not-at-all-ceasefire blew up.“While gas and approval had been closely linked from March through May, when Trump’s approval fell, the June gas price ebbing did not result in a commensurate rise in approval for Trump,” observed Morris. “While gas prices recovered almost a dollar from peak, Trump’s approval ticked up a few points. And then slides right back down to where it started.”Trump and the voters who put him back in the White House in the last election never forgave Joe Biden for high inflation, even after it cooled. Trump personally hammered Biden’s progress, despite U.S. prices steadily being on the decrease up until November, when pessimistic voters removed the Democrat in favor of Trump’s promises.If this lingering hard feelings looks familiar, it should, said Morris — because Trump is now on the bad end of them.Voters in 2024 were actually reacting to excess prices, not the rate of inflation, said Morris. When inflation “cools,” prices don’t fall — they just rise more slowly. “People loathe inflation precisely because they experience it as a permanent cut to their buying power, not a temporary rate that ticks up and down,” said Morris. “… people tend to form their impressions of the president’s handling of the economy and hold onto it.”Republicans are counting on cheap gas to bail them out this November, said Morris, but the evidence from his presidency — and Joe Biden’s — suggests Americans’ evaluations of Trump and his Republican Party are already baked in.All that’s left now is for Trump to ride his crashing plane down to where it’s headed.

Congressional investigators have opened multiple probes into Trump Media & Technology Group over a plan to sell Wall Street firms early access to President Donald Trump's market-moving social media posts.The scheme is called Truth API. Set to launch August 1, it charges up to $100,000 a month for milliseconds-faster access to Trump's Truth Social posts, marketed to hedge funds and high-frequency trading firms.Trump owns roughly 41% of Trump Media through a trust he controls, a letter from House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) noted. That means nearly half of every subscription fee flows directly to him."Markets already move on Truth Social posts," Trump Media interim chief executive Kevin McGurn told CNBC when the company announced the product on July 16."This White House-Wall Street-Trump-Business feedback loop represents the depraved essence of insider trading," Raskin wrote in the Thursday letter to Trump Media demanding company records."Trump Media will soon be selling early access to President Trump's so-called 'Truth' missives to the most sophisticated investment firms in the world," Raskin wrote. "This insider-information scheme will enable Wall Street to profit from the President's frequent market-moving posts on major businesses and cash in on swings in stock prices caused by the President's buying and selling (or pumping and dumping, if you prefer) of publicly traded stocks to unwitting retail investors," the lawmaker added.Virginia Canter, an ethics attorney with Democracy Defenders Fund, was among those who flagged the conflict when CNBC reported on the July 16 announcement."It's a huge conflict of interest," Canter told CNBC.Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) pressed the Securities and Exchange Commission for an investigation, and Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) demanded action from both the Justice Department and the SEC. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) sent their own letter to the SEC."Presidential communications capable of affecting stocks, bonds, oil, currencies, and other assets should not become a premium financial product that gives wealthy institutions a millisecond advantage over retail investors," Torres wrote."Even Donald Trump's teleprompter operator has gotten in on the frenetic self-enrichment at the White House, earning tens of thousands of dollars by betting on the contents of President Trump's speeches on the prediction market Kalshi," Raskin wrote in the letter.That operator, Gabriel Perez, left his post after ABC News reported he had won more than $100,000 betting on what Trump would say in major speeches."The President of the United States should be using the office to 'take Care' that laws are enforced and to advance the public interest," Raskin observed. "Instead, President Trump is, once again, using it to enrich in spectacular fashion himself, his family, and corporate cronies while also destroying the integrity of financial markets in the process."Raskin has given Trump Media until Aug. 13 to produce the records he is demanding, according to the letter.

A source told the Daily Mail the case could be referred to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.Ali Motamedi, a special assistant to the U.S. special envoy to Greenland, says Wax confronted him in early July inside a basement elevator at the Harry S. Truman Building — the State Department's Washington headquarters — placing a hand on his chest as he delivered a threat."If you ever talk s— about me or my family again, I will beat the f— out of you," Wax allegedly said, according to the complaint obtained by the Daily Mail."He then forcefully pushed me before turning around and reentering the elevator," Motamedi wrote."For the record, I do not know what Mr. Wax was referring to with respect to his allegation that I had spoken about him or his family," Motamedi wrote in his complaint.The State Department declined to address the specifics, telling the Daily Mail, "We do not comment on internal personnel matters."A source told the Daily Mail the agency's own security cameras should have captured the encounter."I do believe that there is video evidence of this," the source said, noting the building has "multiple cameras, both inside and outside of any elevator…"A separate source told the Daily Mail there is no video or eyewitness evidence of physical violence."I would imagine that most people would be terminated for this sort of engagement," a source told the Daily Mail, adding the physical nature of the allegation takes it beyond routine personnel discipline.Sources inside the investigating office told the Daily Mail the case has moved unusually slowly, with concern that Wax "has the ear of Donald Trump." Another source pushed back, saying, "A lot of people claim to have a relationship with Trump and don't."It is the second time a fellow Trump official has accused Wax of threatening behavior in a signed document. Last October, Michael Bartels, a senior adviser at the Small Business Administration, signed a notarized affidavit saying Wax demanded he hand over a private Telegram chat log and threatened his professional standing when he refused, the Daily Mail reported. Wax denied being the source of a related leak and faced no known consequences.Wax spent six years as president of the New York Young Republican Club — the first Young Republican chapter to endorse Trump's 2024 presidential campaign, the Daily Mail reported. At the club's 2023 annual dinner, with President Donald Trump in the audience, Wax told supporters a reckoning was coming."Once President Trump is back in office, we won't be playing nice anymore. It will be a time for retribution," he said, according to Politico."Let me especially thank your president Gavin Wax," Trump said at the club's December 2023 gala, the Daily Mail reported."I've heard he's a very abrasive and difficult personality," a State Department source told the Daily Mail of Wax's reputation inside the building.
