The president, she wrote, can no longer afford to spend it defending a pair of accused sex abusers — despite them being major allies.Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the posture a day earlier from the Philippines. "There's no role for us to play at this moment or maybe ever in that regard," Rubio told reporters, according to Axios.The cold shoulder marks a striking reversal. In February 2025, the Financial Times reported that Trump officials pressured Romania to ease travel restrictions on the Tates, and days later the brothers boarded a private jet to Fort Lauderdale.The Tates, dual British-American citizens, were arrested by U.S. Marshals in Miami on July 18 after British prosecutors filed 38 new sex-crime charges, bringing their combined total to 59 counts. Andrew Tate faces 42 charges including rape, sex trafficking and offenses relating to indecent images of a child; Tristan Tate faces 17.Their lawyer, Joseph McBride, who previously represented January 6 defendants, has tried to press familiar buttons. He wrote on X that the brothers were being held as "political prisoners on American soil" in solitary confinement. Andrew Tate himself claimed he was locked in a unit next to "a cannibal who screams throughout the night."None of it has moved the administration.On Capitol Hill, Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), a House Oversight Committee member, sent a letter to Chair James Comer this week requesting an investigation into "potential political interference" surrounding the Tates' case. Ansari also asked that Barron Trump be called to testify about any knowledge of the brothers' alleged crimes. A spokesperson for the Tates has previously called reports linking Barron to Andrew Tate fake news.

Collins had just accepted the WHCA's Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure for her reporting on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's February 2025 Oval Office blowup with Trump — a prize the president promptly dismissed as "fake.""She's a young, attractive woman," Trump told the crowd. "She never smiles. I said, 'Kaitlan do you ever smile? Smile!' You have a nice position; you're at CNN fake news. You should be a happy person. So smile, Kaitlan! Just smile."He then teased that Collins had landed a major sponsorship, before delivering the punchline that it was actually transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney on the Bud Light can, a reference to the 2023 conservative boycott of the beer brand. The riff was met with near silence."That was an appalling hit at our colleague Kaitlan Collins," responded CNN's Betsy Klein.Chief Media Analyst Brian Stelter flagged that a rebuttal from Collins' team was already circulating before Trump had wrapped up his remarks. "And the fact that CNN had a statement supporting Kaitlan ready to go... in advance... tells you everything about this media moment," he wrote.Chief National Affairs Correspondent Jeff Zeleny zeroed in on the contradiction of a commander-in-chief who routinely denounces the press nevertheless spending an entire evening at a dinner devoted to them. "For a president who complains so bitterly about the press, there's never been anyone in the history of the modern presidency who spends as much time talking to reporters," Zeleny wrote.CNN's Kristen Holmes delivered the sharpest jab of the night. "In addition to how much he speaks to the press, he is also one of the most unreliable sources at the White House," she said.The smile jab was not new. Trump has publicly hectored Collins about her facial expressions for months, telling her in June she had "hatred in her eyes" and calling her a "corrupt reporter."Friday's dinner was Trump's first as president. Originally scheduled for April, it was postponed after a gunman breached security outside the ballroom. The scaled-back redo drew about 700 guests, roughly a quarter of the original crowd. The 80-year-old president was also seen repeatedly closing his eyes for extended stretches as awards were handed out earlier in the evening.

Miller raised eyebrows Saturday after telling attendees of a State Department high-level diplomatic meeting that he noticed a common trait among "leftwing terrorists."“You look at these violent antifa demonstrations and you see any photograph of those who were assembled — to be blunt, not one of the people that is demonstrating looks like a normal person,” he said. “Not one looks normal. They’re all deformed in some way — in their appearance, in their dress, in their mannerism.”These comments stunned MSNOW analyst Luke Russert because Miller seemed to be suggesting the moral high-ground was his. Miller famously orchestrated President Donald Trump's first-term immigration policy that put children in cages and faced backlash when leaked emails showed he distributed white nationalist content replete with racist theory based on debunked science. So Russert was surprised when Miller "tried to claim the religious high ground" — and again relied on looks to do it. “The leftist looks at what is beautiful and what is good and what is natural and is filled with envy and hatred,” Miller said. “The leftist looks at a perfect family with the perfect life and a perfect job and perfect kids that go to church every Sunday and is filled with a feeling of inadequacy and jealousy."Russert admitted he was unpersuaded by Miller's argument that Democrats were jealous of his beauty — admittedly on religious grounds. "His suggestion that people’s physical appearance reveals their moral character runs contrary to themes repeated throughout the Bible," Russert wrote. "Jesus says, 'Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly.'"Yet it is worth noting that Miller was carping on a topic his snarkier critics often use to attack him: physical appearance. When Miller in May lobbed an anti-trans insult at state Rep. James Talarico (D-TX), currently running to replace replace John Cornyn in the Senate, the Democratic Party didn't take it lying down. "The Democrats made history in Texas by nominating their first transgender senate candidate," Miller said of Talarico, who is not transgendered. Replied the Democratic Party, "Shut up you ugly f---."
