Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has lost patience with President Donald Trump's strong-arm tactics to pass a bill that can't be passed.The president has grown increasingly obsessed in recent months with passing the SAVE America Act, a package of new voting restrictions so draconian that even the vast majority of state driver's licenses wouldn't be eligible as voter ID without also providing a birth certificate. Senate Republicans do not have the votes either to overcome a Democratic filibuster, or to change Senate rules to make passage easier.Thune has been very blunt that the votes aren't there. But on Wednesday, Trump insisted he didn't know what he was talking about, saying Thune did in fact have the votes and just wasn't letting it get to a vote.In response to reporters telling him Thune said there was no path to passage, he simply said, "That's too bad for him and too bad for the Republican Party."Later in the afternoon, Thune lashed out at Trump's flippant denials of reality.“That must be a different form of math,” said Thune in response to Trump's claim that the votes were there to pass the bill.Trump's other allies are beginning to come to grips with the fact that the legislation won't happen. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who recently signed into law his own state-level version of the SAVE America Act, posted to X, "I think the chance the Senate actually passes a real SAVE Act before the August break is basically zero. Happy to be wrong about this, but I don't think I am."

A Department of Justice lawyer was forced to eat his own words after boasting about getting New Jersey's voter rolls then failing the next day.On Wednesday, a federal judge dismissed a DOJ case seeking New Jersey's unredacted voter rolls. The decision gave the Trump DOJ its 18th straight defeat in court when it comes to its nationwide effort to grab state voter rolls.However, Democracy Docket noted in its coverage of the decision that the DOJ's loss was made more ironic by one of its attorneys boasting the day before that it would secure New Jersey's voter rolls.The boast came after a software glitch led to thousands of noncitizens being mistakenly added to the rolls. The DOJ argued that New Jersey had to hand over its voter rolls because of the error.However, New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) refused the DOJ and wrote in a post on X that "New Jersey will not provide the personal information of thousands of New Jersey residents," along with a copy of a letter to Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon saying as much."The request had no legal basis," Sherrill added. "I will always protect New Jerseyans' personally identifiable information."DOJ Attorney Jesus Osete, who describes himself on his profile as Dhillon's number two, responded to Sherrill with a post of his own. "Challenge accepted," Osete's post read.The next day, U.S. District Judge Zahid Quraishi, a Biden appointee, answered that challenge by throwing out the DOJ's case, Democracy Docket noted.Quraishi even noted that the software glitch had "no bearing" on whether the DOJ had a right to voter rolls.

President Donald Trump's campaign to void former President Biden's pardons has backfired by giving Dr. Anthony Fauci legal justification to refuse testimony at a Senate hearing, according to pro-Trump former prosecutor Bill Shipley. Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment repeatedly when subpoenaed by the Senate Homeland Security Committee to discuss the pandemic response and COVID-19 origins. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) threatened "repercussions" for Fauci's silence and had Capitol Police remove his attorney David Schertler from the hearing room, Politico reported. "Congress should write Fauci a Grant of Immunity using the exact language of the Pardon so it is co-extensive," Schertler wrote on social media. He argued Trump's threats to invalidate Biden's pardons, which Trump declared "null and void" in December 2025, gave Fauci legitimate grounds to claim his testimony could incriminate him if the pardon is voided. Shipley added, Trump's quest to void Biden's pardons had undermined the efforts of Senate Republicans, who contended the pardon should strip Fifth Amendment protections because it eliminates threats for prosecution.
