Trump Says “I Love Inflation” as Americans Face Highest Rate in 3 Years
Trump claims ending the Iran War will curb inflation, but several questions remain — including when the war will end.

President Trump announced that he canceled planned strikes against Iran on Thursday and claimed Iran's leadership "approved" a draft agreement that would extend the ceasefire, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and launch 60 days of negotiations on Iran's nuclear program. Why it matters: Trump has claimed an agreement was close multiple times before, and Iran has not publicly confirmed any agreement. However, three sources briefed on the talks told Axios that key gaps were narrowed during talks between Iranian officials and Qatari mediators on Wednesday. Iran's Fars news agency denied any deal had been agreed, but said there was a "possibility" Tehran would consider signing off. What he's saying: "Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening," Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added that the final points of the deal have been, "in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved," including the U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Egypt. "The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly," Trump added. The other side: Fars, a semi-official news agency affiliated with Iran's Revolutionary Guards, quoted an "informed source close to Iran's negotiation team" as saying that "no text for a preliminary memorandum of understanding with the United States has been approved."But a later report claimed the U.S. had accepted "Iran's proposed text," and as a result the regime could "reconsider and review the agreement once again."Behind the scenes: Negotiations continued late into Wednesday night in Tehran as Qatari envoy Ali Al-Thawadi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi worked to bridge the remaining gaps between the U.S. and Iran.According to three sources briefed on the talks, the Qataris and the Iranians believed on Wednesday that they had reached an agreed-upon text that the U.S. would also accept. The sources said the gaps were narrowed on three key issues:The mechanism for releasing Iran's frozen assets — the most important issue for the Iranians.Arrangements for reopening the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day ceasefire period. How negotiations over Iran's nuclear program would be conducted during the 60-day ceasefire period.According to the sources, Iranian officials told several countries on Thursday that the Tehran talks produced an agreement in principle, but Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei still needed to give final approval. The sources noted that both the Iranians and the Qataris had emphasized that the U.S. strikes overnight significantly increased Iranian suspicions about Trump's real intentions.Earlier on Thursday, Trump had announced the U.S. would "be hitting Iran VERY HARD TONIGHT."What to watch: The White House has believed a deal was imminent at several points during the conflict, only to see negotiations break down again.Go deeper: Trump boils over after Tehran kept him waitingThis is a breaking news story and has been updated throughout.

Donald Trump has nominated the former head of the Securities and Exchange Commission to lead the nation's top intelligence agency after Republicans were stunned by his previous pick.
President Donald Trump won't attend the signing of his own Iran peace deal — the White House has a UFC fight scheduled for the same weekend.Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump announced he had canceled planned strikes against Iran after negotiations reached the "highest level of Iranian leadership." The deal, he said on Truth Social, has been approved by the U.S., Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt "and others," with a naval blockade remaining in place until the agreement is finalized. The time and place of the signing, he added, were yet to be announced. In the Oval Office, Trump filled in one logistical detail: he won't be there."'The Strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe. I won't be able to be there, but JD will be there — Vice President — and some of the people. Steve Witkoff did a great job, Jared," Trump told reporters.Vice President JD Vance and Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff will attend the signing in his place.UFC Freedom 250 is scheduled for Sunday, June 14 — on the South Lawn of the White House. In March, Trump left no ambiguity about his plans for that evening."'I will,'" Trump told boxer Jake Paul when asked if he'd attend the fight. "'It's going to be amazing at the White House. And Dana [White] is a great guy…'"June 14 is also Trump's 80th birthday. To host the seven-fight card — headlined by a lightweight title unification bout between champion Ilia Topuria and interim champ Justin Gaethje — the UFC erected a massive structure on the South Lawn known as "The Claw."The 92-foot-tall lighting grid, built by a Belgian firm, was shipped to Philadelphia, tested, then trucked to Washington. ESPN and Time report the UFC is covering roughly $60 million in costs — including $700,000 to re-sod the South Lawn. The structure dwarfs the White House. Trump's Marine One has been grounded for the duration of the build. The day after the fight, Trump is expected at the G7 Summit in France — which may explain why the Iran signing, if it happens "over the weekend in Europe," is being handed to Vance. Two Virginia residents have filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to halt the UFC event, alleging improper permitting and a violation of the law requiring congressional approval before structures are erected on public land in Washington. The Justice Department fired back in a filing, calling the plaintiffs "two people who believe they have superior taste and want to spoil the event for everyone else."No hearing has been scheduled.
Trump expressed confidence Iran would sign on because “they got hit very hard.”
