Summary
President Donald Trump used the families of those killed by immigrants in his "State of the Union" address to promote his mass deportation campaign. But one thing stood out to viewers about the stories, the graphic descriptions of murder and violence. More than one person noticed that Trump seemed to "relish" in the descriptions. While honoring one soldier who lost his legs during a battle, Trump described "gushing blood that was flowing down the aisle."MS NOW reporter Brandy Zadrozny noted, "The SOTU guests who've lost family or were harmed by undocumented immigrants or political violence are ofc used for political effect but still are genuinely moving. But the way Trump talks about them ... lingering on the blood, the suffering, the injuries, seeming to relish it. It’s so strange." She added that she was moved by those grieving their children and spouses. "Lie, lie, lie, VIOLENCE. Lie, lie, lie, Violence! Boring boring boring, lie, VIOLENCE, boring, lie," described the Bulwark's publisher, Sarah Longwell. One remarked that Trump had a "joyous look on his face" while describing the violence. While others called it "weird." One person highlighted "the colorful descriptions of others’ suffering is truly disturbing."Anyone noticing how gruesome Trump's descriptions are of people dying or being injured? Full of blood, etc. It's excessive and horrendous," said Peg Aloi, a film and TV critic. "I'm going to tell you something as a Trump biographer. I mean it seriously. You need to understand that Trump gets something close to sexual excitement from describing acts of violence. If you wonder why his SOTU speeches always include graphic violence, that's why. It's for him," said biographer Seth Abramson. It was also something MS NOW Rachel Maddow mentioned after the speech talkign about it as "violent p-orn" and the "gushing blood." She described it at one point as Trump almost "luxurianted" over the gore.
