Republican Hawks Don't Want an Iran Deal—and Opportunist Democrats Are Helping Them Along

Once a fraudster, always a fraudster. George Santos is under investigation for placing bets that he would not attend President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address, and then not attending.Ahead of the State of the Union in February, the disgraced ex–Long Island representative posted a video announcing his intention to appear at the Capitol. His post sent the odds of his appearance soaring on the prediction market site Kalshi, which may be better known for sports betting. Then he skipped the event. “Watching SOTU from an airport tv was not part of the plan! FML,” Santos wrote on X. But Santos had already placed bets that he would not appear on Kalshi, three people with direct knowledge of the matter told NPR Tuesday. They alleged that Santos misled the public, and then earned tens of thousands of dollars through insider trading. Kalshi referred the case to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Department of Justice, which have both opened cases into Santos, according to two people familiar with the investigation. When contacted by NPR, Santos responded: “Well, that’s news to me.”In a post on X Tuesday, the former politico appeared to dismiss the reporting. “I hate to disappoint but I don’t engage with rag reporting anymore.… Business as usual on my end haters! 💋” Santos wrote. The rise of prediction market sites such as Kalshi and Polymarket have invited a wave of apparent insider trading in politics. Among campaign staffers, betting on the success or failure of political candidates has become commonplace. In late April, Kalshi banned and fined several political candidates after a company probe found they had bet on themselves. Earlier this year, federal prosecutors charged an active-duty Army soldier involved in the planning and capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro for allegedly using confidential intel to win $400,000 on Polymarket predictions related to the raid.

The former congressman was referred to federal authorities after he bet on his own attendance at the State of the Union address, a person familiar with the matter said.
In New Jersey's 7th Congressional District, incumbent GOP Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. now knows who he will be competing with this year in the general election: Rebecca Bennett, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot who, in a Tuesday primary, defeated three other Democrats. And Never Trump conservative George Conway used the outcome to take a swipe at the "missing" Kean.Political Polls reported the election results on X late Tuesday night, tweeting, "Former navy helicopter Bennett wins the democratic nomination in NJ-07, the most vulnerable seat for Republicans in NJ. She will run against Missing congressman Kean Jr." And Conway had a humorous response to that tweet: "Maybe she can lead a search-and-rescue mission for her opponent."Kean, according to many reports, has been missing from Congress for months. The 39-year-old Bennett defeated three fellow New Jersey Democrats in the primary: businessman Brian Varela, medical doctor Tina Shah and former Biden administration official Michael Roth. Conway himself is running for office in the United States' 2026 midterms.Although the conservative attorney, now 62, spent most of his life as a Republican and was a prominent figure in the right-wing legal movement, he became a Democrat in 2025 and is seeking the Democratic nomination for a race in New York's 12th Congressional District — where Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler isn't seeking reelection. Conway is promising to "make America boring again" if he wins the primary and the general election — an obvious swipe at President Donald Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.Despite his conservative background, Conway is a scathing critic of Trump and the MAGA movement. Conway supported Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election and then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, and he has been quite active in The Lincoln Project (a conservative anti-Trump group).Conway attacks Trump repeatedly during his frequent appearances on MS NOW; Trump, Conway argues, is terrible for conservatism and terrible for the Republican Party. His ex-wife, GOP strategist Kellyanne Fitzpatrick Conway, however, was among Trump's top allies during his first administration.Rep. Thomas Kean Jr. is the son of another well-known New Jersey Republican: Thomas Kean Sr., who served as governor of New Jersey from 1982-1990. Before that, in the early 1970s, the older Kean was speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly.Although New Jersey is a blue state, it sometimes goes GOP in gubernatorial races. The Garden State's other Republican ex-governors include Christine Todd Whitman (who is very much a Never Trumper) and Chris Christie (who, unlike other GOP primary candidates, attacked Trump vigorously when he ran for president in 2024).

Yet another member of Congress was under investigation by the House Ethics Committee amid allegations of inappropriate advances on a staffer, CNN reported on Tuesday.Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) was at the center of the investigation, an issue that has become a priority on Capitol Hill and among lawmakers.According to three anonymous sources, "the panel had made early reach outs in its attempt to follow up on a New York Post story, which alleged Gomez (D-CA) had been spotted kissing an aide, who worked for a different member of Congress, outside a backyard party in 2023," according to the report. Gomez, who is married, has denied these claims. Now, the panel is also investigating other incidents that it learned about in the course of investigating the kissing allegation. In a statement to CNN, Gomez said, “Years ago, I made personal mistakes outside my marriage that have caused real pain to my wife and family. Although my actions were consensual in nature and haven’t violated the law or House ethics rules, that doesn’t diminish the impact that these mistakes have made on those I care about the most.”"I take full responsibility and have committed myself to working through the pain privately with my wife and family," and that "I am deeply sorry for the pain and embarrassment that I brought into our lives," he added.Gomez is the latest in a long line of lawmakers in both parties who have faced allegations of misconduct with staffers.Earlier this year, Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) was forced to resign after being found to have pressured sexual favors and an extramarital affair from a regional staffer who later died in a gruesome suicide. At the same time, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) was forced to quit Congress and end his campaign for governor amid damning new evidence that he sexually assaulted an intoxicated congressional aide and allegedly had inappropriate contact with at least three other women.
California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton this week promised he would investigate Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) for fraud if he wins his Republican bid to become the Golden State’s next leader. Hilton is one of three candidates viewed as the top contenders heading into Tuesday’s nonpartisan primary. Two Democrats, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier […]
Republican lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee are investigating the sanctuary policies in two major California cities, San Diego and San Francisco, that restrict those jurisdictions from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), joined by Reps. Tom McClintock (R-CA) and Darrell Issa (R-CA) sent personalized letters to the […]
