Even conservatives aren’t buying Trump’s Epstein spin

Summary
Conservatives on Twitter/X, the social media platform purchased by Elon Musk in 2022, are lashing out at President Donald Trump supporters for defending him amidst the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.“Epstein Files show Epstein was EXTREMELY concerned about Virginia Giuffre, who was quite vocal in telling the world she was in no way suicidal, but found dead shortly later,” wrote conservative pundit Breck Worsham, also known as The Patriotic Blonde. Worsham quoted an Epstein email saying, “Before I call Trump. With regard Virginia... [are] there any other alternatives?"A user named Robert blasted conservative YourVoice America host Bill Mitchell for falsely claiming Trump had actually tried to stop Epstein.“ABC just admitted it!” Mitchell posted, showing a clip of an anchor saying Trump called the cops to discuss Epstein after Epstein’s arrest. “Trump called the cops on Epstein! Told the local police chief ‘thank goodness you're stopping him!’ He threw Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago when he got out of line. Banned him for life.”He concluded, “Trump was the original whistleblower. Democrats' hoax is blown up again!”Robert was having none of it.“BS,” Robert wrote. “If the conversation in [f]act Took place, Trump called after the Epstein investigation became public and Trump was calling just for a CYA. He also he admitted he knew. Here’s the question Bill, if Maxwell is so evil, why did Trump transfer her to a minimum security prison?”Even Trump supporters who do not explicitly bring up Epstein find their faces rubbed in the scandal. Take right-leaning comedian Rob Schneider, who posted “there needs to be a national reckoning in the U.K.” in reference to a story on toddlers receiving gender treatment “if this is true.”"’If this is true?’” responded the political comedy account The Possum Politic. “Try verifying before you post. ... Pay attention to the Epstein Files and Donald Trump's involvement along with members of his regime[.]"Other Republicans are also distancing themselves from Trump on the Epstein scandal. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, for example, tweeted last week “if you can’t take up for children who were sex trafficked, who can you take up for?”He answered his own question, “No one. You’ll defend no one if your political capital is at stake, and you need to be purged from our party.”
