Florida dad went to pick up 18-month-old from day care — what he found was horrifying

A Florida family was completely devastated by the tragedy that unfolded on Monday after a father went to pick up a child at day care in Plantation.The man, who was not identified publicly, believed he had dropped off the child in the morning and went to work. At the end of the day, he went to the day care and let out a scream after finding his horrific mistake.'He opened the door, then slammed it shut. ... And he let out this scream.' The child was found dead in the back seat of the car.Leslie Novoa, the owner and director of A World of Discovery Academy, explained to the South Florida Sun Sentinel why the staff didn't react when the child wasn't dropped off that morning.Novoa said the man and his wife would alternate dropping off two kids at the day care. On that day, they called to inform them that they would not be dropping off the older child.When they didn't drop off any child, Novoa said no one found it suspect."This is a tragedy that happened to them and to all of us," said Novoa, who said the family had been very caring and very loving in their interactions.Novoa said the man had expected to pick up the child and only realized what happened when he opened the back door of the car."He opened the door, then slammed it shut," Novoa said. "In both 2018 and 2019, a record number of 53 children died after being left in a hot vehicle."About half of the hot-car deaths result in charges against a parent, and of those, about 80% result in convictions. 'Pretty good burn': Justice Jackson dismantles Clarence Thomas' double-speak dissent

As the Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling on the last day of its term protecting birthright citizenship and invalidating a signature policy of President Donald Trump's administration, Justice Clarence Thomas took a swipe at the majority in his dissent, stunning legal experts with an argument that would have effectively rewritten 14th Amendment protections out of the Constitution for millions of people.But Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson went out of her way in her concurrence with Chief Justice John Roberts' majority opinion to demolish Thomas' argument — and in particular, point out that he was talking out of both sides of his mouth on how to interpret constitutional rights."I write separately to respond to some of the themes in the principal dissent," wrote Jackson. "Despite his longstanding endorsement of a 'colorblind' Constitution, Justice Thomas now surprisingly suggests that the Citizenship Clause was a race-conscious remedial measure, relating only to 'freed slaves such as Dred Scott,' ... and those who shared with them certain characteristics ... It is for this reason, he says, that 'children who were born in the United States but [to parents] not domiciled here' are not entitled to claim birthright citizenship."This, noted Georgia trial lawyer and legal analyst Andrew Fleischman in a post to X, is a "pretty good burn here.""Justice Thomas says that the 14th Amendment does not allow us to treat people differently on the basis of their race to help them (affirmative action, voting rights). But then he says it was also laser-focused on restoring citizenship for black Americans," he wrote. Ultimately, Jackson's concurrence noted, Thomas is wrong on the latter point anyway."That narrow vision of the 14th Amendment bears little relationship to the history of its ratification," she wrote. "Even worse, Justice Thomas's telling elides the entire point of the Second Founding: The Reconstruction Amendments were an anticaste, antisubordination reset for the Nation, not a mere spot treatment for the dark stain of slavery."The majority opinion by Roberts agrees with this assessment, noted Slate's Mark Joseph Stern, detailing the history that proves Congress in the 1860s understood and affirmed birthright citizenship would apply to the children of immigrants.

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was spotted at the Capitol on Monday — and no one knows exactly why.This comes after a blockbuster day of Supreme Court opinions that included upholding current state mail ballot counting systems and a massive transformation of the administrative state in President Donald Trump's favor; it also comes as the court is set to deliver its final opinions of the term, including a landmark decision about whether Trump can abolish birthright citizenship.According to at least one reporter on Capitol Hill, Republicans believe the 78-year-old far-right jurist was there for medical reasons."Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was just in the Capitol," wrote Politico's Meredith Lee Hill. "He declined to answer questions about why he was here as he left the House side. He did not meet with House GOP leadership and Rs believe he was here for the House physician office, per sources."MS NOW reporter Mychael Schnell could not ascertain this, but confirmed the secretive nature of Thomas' presence on the Hill."Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas just walked through the House side of the Capitol," she said. "He didn’t say why he was here. But told me he was meeting with 'nobody.' I said tomorrow will be a big day at the court. 'I guess so,' he responded. Would he give a sneak peak of decisions? 'Nope,' he told me with a chuckle."The whole situation raised eyebrows among political observers, with former President Barack Obama spokesperson TJ Adams Falconer posting a GIF of "Veep" protagonist Selina Meyer saying, "Well, that's (expletive) ... not good."Thomas, who has served on the Supreme Court since 1991 and is currently its most senior justice, has thus far rebuffed all calls from Republican legal strategists to step down and allow Trump to replace him with someone younger.
