Summary
Eight officials in the Bureau of Prisons face civil contempt charges after they made a stunning threat to a trans inmate who is suing President Donald Trump's administration. On Thursday, federal Judge Royce Lamberth in Washington, D.C., ordered the government to show cause in a case where trans inmate Grace Pinson faced retaliation from prison officials after suing the Trump administration. The inmate claimed she was subjected to a body cavity search in front of several male officers, had her personal and legal paperwork tossed in a cell covered in feces, and had her stay in segregation extended even after she was approved to return to the general population. One of the officers also threatened Pinson by telling her, "If you want to make it home alive, you need to stop sending stuff to that f------ judge," according to a court filing. Pinson filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration after it issued a policy prohibiting trans people in prisons from receiving gender-affirming care. That policy caused Pinson to lose access to her hormone treatment, according to the court filing. One officer facing civil contempt also told Pinson that he doesn't "give a f--- what that judge says, I do what I want." The officers have until 5 p.m. on Tuesday to provide evidence justifying their actions.
