Trump is 'botching' key issue — and that's finally 'sunk in' for MAGA: ex-GOP strategist

Summary
A former GOP strategist has broken down the reason he believes the MAGA faction of Donald Trump's voter base is splintering so rapidly.Rick Wilson, founder of The Lincoln Project, suggested the economy is affecting most Americans, including those in the MAGA movement. The former Republican Party strategist suggested that this is the reason, more than any other, for the president's approval rating to be in rapid decline. In an appearance on Fast Politics with Molly Jong-Fast, Wilson said, "We're seeing it in the polling where, for years and years, it was that 35% that could not be moved, and now it's the 25% that cannot be moved."And I think there's some stuff happening out there — I think it's the economy, and his [Trump's] absolute botching of the economy. I think that's a huge factor. You can't unweigh that factor."Wilson went on to suggest this is an issue the Biden administration had struggled to tackle also, and that Trump is now parroting the economic excuses of the previous president. The ex-GOP strategist said, "The Biden administration said the same things to the Republican and Democratic voters that Trump is saying now. The stock market's doing great, and it was. Prices are going down, and they were. But it didn't make people feel better because they didn't experience it in their day-to-day life."With Trump now, I think it has sunk in because you're starting to see these polls like, 'Who was a better president?' People are saying Biden. Striking."I think they had this weird sense that maybe it had started to turn the corner, and then Trump did all this tariff stuff. That is hitting very much in the face of a lot of conservative voters. They all voted for Donald Trump."Wilson has predicted further disasters for the Trump administration are looming too, with Pam Bondi set for a rough time in the near future. In his Substack, Wilson wrote, "The question is no longer whether the Attorney General of the United States believes that shielding her Master is a defensible exercise of executive authority. She quite evidently does."The first Attorney General to go to prison did so because he convinced himself that the ends justified the means and that the law was pliable in his hands. Pam Bondi should take that to heart, if she has a heart."
