Trump Cabinet member created 'political nightmare' for Republicans on key campaign issue

Summary
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem just created a "political nightmare" for President Donald Trump, according to one analyst. Noem appeared before the Senate and House judiciary committees on sequential days this week, where she was questioned about her leadership at DHS and the actions of immigration officers in Minnesota. Carine Hajjar, an opinion columnist at The Washington Post, argued in a new column on Wednesday that Noem's appearances revealed how sloppily her agency has managed Trump's deportation operations, making it far more difficult for immigration hawks to defend those actions as the 2026 midterm elections approach. "Noem got gentler treatment from Republicans at a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday," Hajjar wrote. "But it remains true that she has created a political nightmare for immigration hawks. While most voters still support cracking down on illegal immigration, sloppy enforcement and tone-deaf messaging have undermined Homeland Security’s credibility. Heading into the midterms, one of the GOP’s most potent issues is losing its edge."Immigration was one of the key issues that propelled Trump to the White House a second time. However, public support for his immigration enforcement actions has waned since the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Minnesota, earlier this year. A Reuters poll from mid-February found that just 38% of voters support Trump's immigration actions, which is down from 50% shortly after he took office. "Americans are willing to support orderly deportations — they voted for a president who promised to do them en masse," Hajjar wrote. "But Americans are also generous and accommodating. Understanding that some deportations are necessary doesn’t mean they want to see neighbors, workers and parents chased down by an agent — much less turned into a social media spectacle."Read the entire column by clicking here.
