Michael Baumgartner (R-Wash.) try to blame former President Joe Biden for Trump’s bad economy more than a year into Trump’s second term.The interview began with Brown pointing to new CNN polling this week showing 70 percent of Americans disapprove of how Trump is handling the economy, and 72 percent disapprove of his handling of the Iran war he unilaterally started.“Is he putting your party in a bad position ahead of the midterms?” Brown then asked Baumgartner.But the lawmaker wasn’t budging from his talking points, claiming Trump is “putting America on a pathway to very strong economic growth” with the “largest tax reduction in American history.”That tax cut Baumgartner is referring to, however, is the controversial and unpopular Big Beautiful Bill set to throw beneficiaries off federal safety nets just after the midterms.“I think the American people trust President Trump. And I think Republicans are doing a good job. And I think we're going to do very well in these upcoming elections,” said Baumgartner, in defiance of almost every poll that’s come out in the last 90 days.“But what do you say then, to those Americans who don't feel that way, because it's several polls, not just the CNN poll, that showed sentiment among the everyday Americans. … What do you say to those who aren't feeling it, who are struggling to get by every day?”“Well, you know, it is true that that there was inflation left over from the Biden administration,” Baumgartner. “We have done a lot in Congress to reduce some of the regulation and impediments to economic growth—”“This is Trump’s economy,” Brown inserted, before Baumgartner droned on with his talking points.“But you do agree that this is Trump’s economy, right?”At that point Baumgartner attempted to shift gears and claim voters shouldn’t blame presidents for their economy — despite name-checking Biden for Biden-era inflation.“Well, it's the presidents who always take too much credit and too much blame for the economy. A GOP governor is drawing a hard line against a key demand made by President Donald Trump ahead of midterms, per a report.According to reporting by NBC News, Vermont Gov. Phil Scott said during a panel on Friday that he will defend mail-in ballots despite Trump's efforts to limit them. Scott defended states' rights and rejected the idea of letting the federal government overhaul mail-in voting when asked about Trump's demand for Republicans to "nationalize" elections. "I would hope that all, if not the majority, of Democrats would agree that this is ours, not the federal government's," Scott said. "We were here before the federal government was, the states were, and so we formed the government. Trump also falsely stated that his stalled SAVE America Act would ban it, and a federal judge struck down one of his executive orders aimed at limiting mail-in ballots and creating federal voter rolls, a ruling Trump has asked the Supreme Court to lift before the midterms.Scott argued that the states' rights laid out in the 10th Amendment protect their mail-in voting system, per NBC News. The amendment is "clear on the role of the states in terms of elections," Scott said. "So I think that we should follow that, and we're closer to the people."States are "closer to our people," Scott continued. "We know what's right and what's wrong, and we can control the elections."He added that participation in mail-in voting has increased among GOP voters in his state and described it as popular with Vermont Republicans, which he said has led to a boost in GOP representation in the state Legislature, NBC News reported."In Vermont, I would have to say, mail-in ballots are popular. Who are they popular with? Republicans," Scott said.

Virginia Democrats are welcoming criminals back to the ballot box.Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) has restored voting rights to 66,085 felons in her first six months in office. That’s 56,000 more than former Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) restored during his entire four-year tenure, according to the official annual reports filed by the secretary of the commonwealth.‘A shameful relic of our Jim Crow past.’“I’m proud that — after contending with my predecessor's efforts to deny Virginians their fundamental rights — we have restored the rights of more than 66,000 Virginians who have served their time,” Spanberger said in a Friday press release. “These Virginians deserve the right to use their vote, make their voices heard, and be recognized as contributing citizens to our Commonwealth and country.”Spanberger's office did not respond to requests for comment. Under Youngkin, applicants were required to submit a formal Restoration of Rights form detailing whether they had completed all terms of incarceration, were on probation or parole, or had been convicted of a violent offense. The governor also instructed Secretary of the Commonwealth Candi Mundon King to expand “proactive identification” of eligible ex-convicts.Current eligibility is determined by whether a person has been convicted of a felony and is no longer incarcerated.“By giving these Virginians back their ability to make an impact at the local, state, and national levels, we are empowering our neighbors to take hold of their second chance,” Spanberger said. “This fall, voters can cast their ballots for Virginia to no longer strip so many of our neighbors of their fundamental rights — a shameful relic of our Jim Crow past.”Virginia voters will decide in November whether to pass a constitutional amendment automatic restoration of voting rights for released felon inmates. The right-wing media ecosystem that has spent years building up President Donald Trump's image and promoting his causes is now splintering, according to a new report.Many of the most prominent right-wing personalities have seen their platforms shrivel up, according to an analysis by The New York Times published on Friday.Podcaster Benny Johnson has lost millions of YouTube views since Trump's re-election high, while Dan Bongino's livestream audience has shrunk by roughly half since he briefly left broadcasting to serve as FBI deputy director before resigning months later. Ben Shapiro's YouTube numbers cratered from 27 million weekly views in 2024 to about 4 million, and his outlet The Daily Wire has seen web traffic collapse by half. Nick Fuentes, architect of the neo-Nazi "Groyper" movement, admitted in an email last year, “It seems that everyone in the space is experiencing a drop-off in views from 2025.”One of the very few exceptions who has managed to buck the trend is Candace Owens, a far-right influencer who has maintained relevance by seizing on a string of conspiracy theories — including many about fellow influencers on the right, like the murder of Charlie Kirk supposedly being a covert operation by shadowy world-spanning forces.Experts say the shake-up stems partly from Republicans controlling Washington, making it harder to stoke the outrage that fueled these creators' rise, along with new competition from apolitical influencers pulling audiences toward gaming and lifestyle content. A growing split between pro- and anti-Trump voices on the right — supercharged by backlash to Trump's war with Iran — has only deepened the fractures, with once-loyal figures like Fuentes turning openly critical of the president.Media watchdogs warn the splintering couldn't come at a worse time for Republicans, who've relied on a unified influencer army to drive turnout each election cycle. Republicans worried about preserving their House or Senate majorities in November are wishing for the miracle of low gas prices, but recent surveys show they needn’t bother. Their goose is already cooked, regardless of where fuel prices go.When you’re down this far it’s nearly impossible to pull out of the dive, and after several new polls dropped this week, President Donald Trump hit the worst approval rating of his presidency. He also whacked a new low two days in a row with a FiftyPlusOne approval of 36 percent, amounting to a net score of −25.This is a historically bad rating for a president at this point in his term — worse than Biden’s at this point in 2022, and worse than Trump’s in his first term. It’s so bad now, that analyst G. Elliot Morris says falling gas prices won’t rescue Trump — or the Republican Party.“Cheaper gas didn’t buy him much, if anything at all,” said Morris, seeing Trump’s popularity fail to lift out of the doldrums despite a brief drop in gas prices this summer.Generally, a president’s approval drops as gas prices go up. Prices spiked from $3 to $4.50 on average this spring thanks to Trump’s entirely voluntary war on Iran. It dropped to an average of $3.78 in early July when Trump and his media puffed up an Iran “ceasefire.” But national averages jumped back to $4.10 a gallon when that ceasefire evaporated.It’s been a few weeks and the numbers are in, and what struck analysts was how low Trump’s approval remained even as he enjoyed a premature price dip before his not-at-all-ceasefire blew up.“While gas and approval had been closely linked from March through May, when Trump’s approval fell, the June gas price ebbing did not result in a commensurate rise in approval for Trump,” observed Morris. “While gas prices recovered almost a dollar from peak, Trump’s approval ticked up a few points. And then slides right back down to where it started.”Trump and the voters who put him back in the White House in the last election never forgave Joe Biden for high inflation, even after it cooled. Trump personally hammered Biden’s progress, despite U.S. prices steadily being on the decrease up until November, when pessimistic voters removed the Democrat in favor of Trump’s promises.If this lingering hard feelings looks familiar, it should, said Morris — because Trump is now on the bad end of them.Voters in 2024 were actually reacting to excess prices, not the rate of inflation, said Morris. When inflation “cools,” prices don’t fall — they just rise more slowly. “People loathe inflation precisely because they experience it as a permanent cut to their buying power, not a temporary rate that ticks up and down,” said Morris. “… people tend to form their impressions of the president’s handling of the economy and hold onto it.”Republicans are counting on cheap gas to bail them out this November, said Morris, but the evidence from his presidency — and Joe Biden’s — suggests Americans’ evaluations of Trump and his Republican Party are already baked in.All that’s left now is for Trump to ride his crashing plane down to where it’s headed.

Conducted between July 23-27, the poll also found that Texas voters indicated they were “falling behind financially” by a more than 2-to-1 margin.Sara McGee, the Democratic nominee for Texas’ 132nd Congressional District, predicted the new polling data would force Abbott’s hand in adjusting his campaign strategy over the next 95 days.“Republicans will say this poll is fake only for Greg Abbott to turn around and flip on data centers, and then roll out a ‘healthcare plan’ after refusing federal Medicaid expansion dollars for the last 12 years,” McGee wrote Friday in a social media post on X. “He’s seen the numbers. November is coming.”In 2024, Trump performed strongly with several key demographics in Texas, securing more support from independent and Hispanic voters than his Democratic opponent, former Vice President Kamala Harris. According to the new poll, however, Hinojosa leads Abbott with both groups by 27 and 16 points, respectively.Abbott has served as governor since 2015 and is seeking a fourth term that would make him the longest-serving governor in Texas history.
