Summary
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) took a victory lap after the U.S. Supreme Court shot down President Donald Trump's tariffs. The court ruled 6-3 that the 79-year-old president had unlawfully invoked the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose sweeping tariffs on global trade partners, and the 84-year-old McConnell signaled his agreement."Today, the Supreme Court reaffirmed authority that has rested with Congress for centuries," McConnell posted on X. "The American people already know that tariffs make building and buying here at home more expensive. And Kentuckians understand this painful reality better than most. But the use of IEEPA to circumvent Congress in the imposition of tariffs, already without precedent, isn’t just bad policy – it’s also illegal."He posted a link to his official statement, which added a paragraph stating the constitutional basis for the court's ruling."Congress’ role in trade policy, as I have warned repeatedly, is not an inconvenience to avoid," McConnell said. "If the executive would like to enact trade policies that impact American producers and consumers, its path forward is crystal clear: convince their representatives under Article 1.”
