Summary
On Monday, a man pardoned by President Donald Trump for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was arraigned in Arlington, Virginia, on an assault and battery charge — and then, after he left the courthouse, was arrested in the parking lot on an "outstanding warrant" in a completely unrelated case. The re-arrest of Bryan Betancur, confirmed by Metro Transit police, was first reported by Tisha Lewis of FOX 5 DC, who posted videos of the arrest to X.Betancur was arrested last week after allegedly touching several women on D.C. trains and posting videos of himself stroking their hair without consent.According to Amanda Moore, a reporter who says she was stalked by him, this is part of a pattern of predatory behavior that stretches back even before the Jan. 6 attack: "He was wearing an ankle monitor when he stormed the US Capitol ... which he had been given after he broke into a Baltimore County elementary school."Federal prosecutors also described Betancur in filings on the Jan. 6 case as a "self-professed white supremacist" with a dream to be a "lone-wolf killer."Betancur is far from the only one of the roughly 1,500 rioters Trump gave a mass pardon, who find themselves in trouble with the law again. Last October, pardoned rioter Christopher Moynihan was arrested over threats to assassinate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). And last week, Florida handyman Andrew Paul Johnson, another recipient of a Jan. 6 pardon, was sentenced to life in prison for molesting two children.Last year, rioter Matthew Huttle was shot dead during a traffic stop, allegedly while resisting arrest.
