The wife of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) did something "bizarre" three days after he was hospitalized for a possible heart attack, according to a new report. Elaine Chao, Transportation secretary during Trump's first administration and McConnell's wife since 1993, left the country, the Daily Beast reported Saturday.Chao flew to Beijing to discuss China-U.S. relations with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on June 17, according to the Daily Beast and Chinese media. This was three days after McConnell, 84, was reportedly found "unconscious" and rushed from his home in Washington to the hospital, reports show. A dispatcher sent an Advanced Life Support ambulance to McConnell's home on June 14, according to audio released by journalist Desiree Townsend. McConnell's spokesperson confirmed that day that the former Senate GOP leader had been hospitalized. A June 22 statement said McConnell was "working closely with staff" on Senate and Kentucky business. A McConnell team member said on June 30 that he was still recovering .This was McConnell's second hospitalization since February, when he received treatment for flu-like symptoms, according to reports.McConnell, who has announced his retirement at the end of the year, has faced repeated health scares. The Kentucky Republican was hospitalized with a concussion after falling in 2023.The childhood polio survivor also froze publicly twice that same year.

I don't know. Someone within his staff has said that he is improving – what that means, we don't know. But here's what we do know: even if he is alive, he is unfit to serve and he should not be finishing out his term through January.”In mid-June, McConnell was rushed to the hospital for an undisclosed medical reason, though new reporting from this week revealed he had been hospitalized for a potential heart attack. This follows his hospitalization in February after experiencing flu-like symptoms, which itself follows several other health scares including multiple falls and freezing up in public.The new details revealed this week on McConnell’s most recent health incident, however, suggest the lawmaker may be forced into an early retirement, Booco cautioned.“Now, he was apparently found unconscious and unresponsive, required CPR due to cardiac arrest. That typically means lack of oxygen to the brain, on a brain that has already suffered a lot, that is already 84,” Booco said. “If I were a speech language pathologist evaluating him and on his medical team, there would be significant concerns for even just the risk of going back to work on his prognosis. I would very likely say, given your age and health history, you should retire immediately.”

Public events, when they occurred, were typically scheduled for the afternoon or later. The same pattern held in the preceding months, the outlet found. Trump had "Executive Time" listed on his schedule 26 mornings in May and every day in April. He had public appearances before 11 a.m. on 11 days in May – four of them golf outings and three during a trip to China – and on six days in April.Scheduled morning events have also frequently run late or been canceled, according to the Daily Beast's review. A bill-signing set for June 10 at 10 a.m. was delayed more than an hour. A housing bill signing scheduled for noon on June 24 was called off entirely – Trump announced the cancellation in a social media post sent shortly before 11 a.m., after Republican lawmakers had already set up for the event in the Capitol's Statuary Hall.The White House did not directly address the Daily Beast's questions about the president's schedule or the meaning of "Executive Time." A spokesman sent the outlet a statement describing Trump as sharp and energetic and criticizing past media coverage of former President Joe Biden's health, without addressing Trump's own schedule.The Daily Beast also cited reporting from a recent book on the administration by New York Times journalists Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan, which described Trump as a "night owl" prone to staying up through the night on the phone or watching television. On one such occasion, the book recounted, "an aide checked on the President only to find that he was still asleep in the residence." The book also reported that Trump and first lady Melania Trump maintain separate bedrooms at the White House.
