Summary
A judge's recent rebuke of a key member of President Donald Trump's cabinet just created a significant headache for the GOP as the midterms approach, according to a new analysis. On Monday, a federal judge in Boston blocked several of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s most controversial policies from taking effect, including changes to the vaccine schedule for children and to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's list of recommended vaccines. While the policy implications are significant in their own right, Jonathan Cohn of The Bulwark argued in a new article that the judge's order will make it harder for Trump and the GOP to "change the subject" about vaccines as the midterms approach. "In short, Team Trump would prefer to change the subject. Murphy’s ruling makes that harder," Cohn wrote. "Which, perhaps, is appropriate. The debate here isn’t simply about whether Kennedy is making decisions in ways that comply with the law. It’s also about whether he is making decisions in ways that are good for public health. And this case highlights multiple ways in which he is not."Kennedy has been a key member of the Trump cabinet because of his ties to anti-vaccine movements. However, he has faced significant scrutiny for posting AI-generated videos featuring a shirtless version of himself and his rapid changes to public health policies.
