Summary
President Donald Trump revealed Saturday night that he initially mistook the sound of gunfire for a dropped tray at the White House Correspondents' Dinner — and that it was Melania who first sensed something was wrong"I heard a noise. I sort of thought it was a tray, a tray going down. From quite far away," Trump told reporters at a White House press conference. "But it was a gun."The first lady was quicker to read the situation. "Melania was saying, 'that's a bad noise,'" Trump recounted. "We were whisked away. It was very quick." Trump reflected on the broader experience with characteristic bluntness. "It's always shocking when this happens. It's happened to me," he said, a reference to the assassination attempts against him during the 2024 campaign. The president also revealed he had been prepared to deliver a combative speech before the evening was derailed. "We held out right until the end," he said, adding, "I was all set to really rip." He suggested the chaotic circumstances meant he could no longer be as aggressive as planned. The dinner was evacuated after a man armed with an apparent shotgun approached the metal detectors near the hotel lobby. A Secret Service agent was shot but protected by a bulletproof vest. The suspect — identified as a 30-year-old man from California — is in custody. Trump, Melania, Vice President JD Vance and multiple cabinet members were safely evacuated. Trump said the dinner will be rescheduled within 30 days.President Trump on the events that unfolded at the WHCD: I was all set to really rip it.
