GOP lawmaker intrigued by Fox host's idea for passing law without votes: 'Great question'
Source: Raw Story · Bias: Far Left
Summary
Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo floated a blatantly unconstitutional suggestion for President Donald Trump to get a Republican voter suppression law passed, and a GOP congressman said he'd look into it.House Republicans passed the SAVE America Act, which would require documented proof of citizenship to vote and potentially disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, but the Trump-backed bill has run into Democratic opposition in the Senate, where it lacks the votes to overcome the 60-vote filibuster threshold."Could the president implement an executive order to get it across the finish line to the midterms?" Bartiromo asked.Trump already tried something similar last year in a March 25 executive order directing the Election Assistance Commission to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship on the national voter registration form, although courts have repeatedly blocked key portions of that order, but Rep. Mark Harris (R-NC) was intrigued by Bartiromo's idea."Well, that's a great question," Harris said. "I've not heard that post before, but I don't know the answer to that, quite frankly."Federal judges have ruled repeatedly that Trump acted beyond his legal authority by trying to mandate new voter registration requirements and directing an independent agency to make major changes to election rules, and they found that the requirement would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters who do not have ready access to those documents.
