Another blue state launches counterattack as Trump and GOP 'rig' Congressional elections

Summary
A group in Colorado has proposed a new election map that could give Democrats a 7-1 advantage in the House of Representatives, according to a Denver Post report. Colorado's current Congressional delegation includes four Democrats and four Republicans. The proposed map could make three Republican-leaning districts currently occupied by Reps. Gabe Evans (R-CO), Jeff Hurd (R-CO), and Jeff Crank (R-CO) are more competitive for Democrats. What makes the Colorado plan different from other redistricting proposals is that it would leave Rep. Lauren Boebert's (R-CO) district as a Republican stronghold, according to the report. Other plans that have been introduced sought to eliminate Republican-held seats. “No one wanted to have to take this action — independent redistricting is the ideal,” said Curtis Hubbard, a spokesperson for Coloradans for a Level Playing Field, the group proposing the new map. “But with Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans actively working to rig congressional elections, resulting in the potential gain of up to 27 seats in Congress, Colorado must join other states in countering this unprecedented power grab.”The redistricting wars began last year after Texas Republicans forced through a new election map during a special session. It is not uncommon for a state legislature to redraw its election maps, but Republican-controlled state legislatures have been undertaking mid-cycle redistricting to blunt losses in the 2026 midterms. The map in Texas made five Democratic-held seats more competitive for Republicans. The map was challenged in court, but the Supreme Court ruled that the map can be used in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections. Other blue states, like California and New York, have also passed new election maps ahead of the midterm, according to the National Council of State Legislatures.
